"UNIABUJA CENTER FOR DISTANCE LEARNING AND CONTINUING EDUCATION (CDL&CE)"

The Centre for Distance Learning and Continuing Education (CDL&CE) is designed to cater for workers interested in getting a degree. Most of its lectures are conducted online, making it flexible and easy for workers to acquire a degree. Admission into the CDL&CE degree courses does not require JAMB or post UTME. At completion of the programme, graduates are issued letter of exclusion from the National Youth Service Corps as a result of the fact that since it is a programme designed for the working class, it is assumed that most of the students would have exceeded the age of thirty at the point of graduation, in addition to being workers already, making it uncalled for, for them to serve like graduates of the regular programme. Admission requirements for the degree courses run by the CDL&CE at the 100 level are credit passes in five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics at the ordinary level (WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB and Grade II) which must be obtained by a candidate at no more than two (2) sittings. Three (3) of the credit passes must be in subjects relevant to the degree course applied for.

Admission into the CDL&CE does not require JAMB or post-UTME.

MY UNIVERSITY!!
MY PRIDE!!!
..A DAY WITH DSA UNIABUJA...

Dr Abubakar Umar Kari is an associate Professor of Sociology, Dean Students Affairs of the Prestigious University of Abuja.

He hailed from Bauchi State.

He had his Primary and Secondary school education in Bauchi State. He had his first degree at University of Abuja, Master and PhD at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (ABU).

He was one of the pioneer students of University of Abuja. While he was in University of Abuja as a student, he was involved immensely in Leadership positions as he was the first Editor In Chief of the first News Journal of the prestigious University of Abuja. He happens to be the first democratic elected Students' Union Government President (SUG PRESIDENT) of University of Abuja and many more.

As the SUG President he faced alot of challenges such as suspension and more, as he was the first SUG President of University of Abuja and also it was during military regime in the country, when activism was not taking kindly in the country.
"All the challenges that came during my term as a student leader has taught me to be tolerant, accommodating and also made me believe that success is incremental", he said.

During the interview he discussed with us the change that has happened to Nigeria's educational system. Talking about the merit side of it, he talked about how advancement in technology has made studies easier in ways like the availability of e-learning compare to their own time as a student when everything was been carried out in an analog way. Also talking about the demerit side of it, the technological advancement has led to the laziness and irresponsibility among the students. More so, talking about the effect of increment in population in our educational system nowadays in relation to the availability of educational resources is obviously imbalance, compare to their own time when there was sparse population on campus and resources where available to cater for their needs, saying the Old Female Hostel in mini campus was the major and only Hostel for all the students as at that time and could easily accommodate all due to the sparse population.

Also during the interview, he got to discuss with us about the ongoing ASUU strike, as he was the former Chairman of Political Committee of National ASUU. He got to explained the cause of the strike, which he said that the Federal Government and ASUU came to an agreement during the regime of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on how to revive the Nigeria educational system that seems to be collapsing day by day, of which they both concluded that the Federal Government will be remitting N200bn every year to support Nigeria education system which was named "Revitalization Fund", but unfortunately, the Federal Government has not for once complied with the agreement throughout the President Jonathan's regime and our current President PMB, revitalization fund has never been paid for once, which has accumulated to a total of N1.3trn. According to him ASUU believes strongly that Federal Government has enough money to fund Nigeria education system.

In a way of trying to better our educational system, ASUU came up with a plan which is the blueprint of Tetfund. ASUU wrote and design TETfund document for Federal Government.

What is Tetfund?
Tetfund is a two percent of profit before tax for every company operating in Nigeria.

ASUU advised the Federal Government to channel the Tetfund into education system, which its impact is really obvious to everyone. Which this shows that ASUU has never been against the Nigeria Students but rather fighting for their right to good education.

Finally, he advised we the younger ones to always believe in whatever we are doing as long as it is the right thing to do, stand firm, face the challenges and never give up. Winners never quit and quitters never win, he says.

It is popularly called Sandwich programme, it is a part-time programme specifically designed for teachers with a background in education (NCE) to obtain a degree. That is why all programmes of the IOE are education programmes. Lectures usually hold when students of secondary and primary schools are on long vacation (so that they will have the space to attend without it affecting their jobs as teachers). Like the CDL&CE, this programme does not require JAMB and Post UTME as obtained in the case of regular students. Admission requirement into the part-time programme at the 100 level are credit passes in five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics at the ordinary level (WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB and Grade II) which must be obtained by a Candidate at no more than two (2) sittings. Three (3) of the credit passes must be in subjects relevant to the degree course applied for.

Admission requirement into the 200L Sandwich programme is the National Certificate of Education (NCE) upper credit, in addition to credit passes in five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics which must be obtained by a Candidate at no more than two (2) sittings.
