ASUU strike: FG agrees to pay N30bn earned allowance

ASUU, FG delegations meet over strike on Thursday, October 15, 2020

The Federal Government has agreed to release N30 billion earned academic allowance to the university lecturers.

The money will be paid in tranches between May 2021 and February 2022.

The PUNCH gathered that the FG also promised to spend N20 billion on the revitalisation of the education sector as part of concessions meant to end the seven-month strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

These were part of the agreements reached during the ongoing meeting between the FG and ASUU leadership on Thursday.
Speaking earlier before going into a closed-door session, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said students were being recruited into the protests following the closure of universities occasioned by the ASUU strike.

He expressed the hope that ASUU would call off the strike soon, noting that the government has been finding ways to end the seven-month strike.

The government team was led by Ngige, his minister of state, Festus Keyamo (SAN), and others, while the ASUU delegation was led by its President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi.
Ngige said, “For the past one week, we have all been on our toes, we have been meeting and we pray that this meeting will yield some good fruits.

The minister of state for Education Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba said this concerning the ongoing ASUU strike and we quote:

"Government is actually not holding anyone to ransom. It says this is how I want to pay and it has to be through IPPIS. You can leave the employment."
"You can opt out of it and say I no longer want to teach. You can find other professions. What we need now are probably more farmers."

"You cannot keep forcing your employer and tell him, 1 will like you to pay me my money through my pillow. Or, I will like you to pay it through this mailbox. ASUU has a lot of complaints and dissipation around it. That is legitimate but doesn't mean you should force you."

*Unverified and Hinted from high stakeholder :* We(Universities under ASUU) may not resume this year because of the slow, unproductive and uncooperative way the FG is handling the ASUU issues.

Hinted: FG is not ready to drop the IPPIS issue that leads to the ongoing strike and ASUU is not ready to call off the strike without suitable Negotiation and agreement.

UBA 2020 Foundation essay competition for Senior Secondary School students commences; UBA Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has announced the commencement of the 2020 edition of its annual National Essay Competition in Nigeria, with a call for entries. The essay will be organized by the National Essay Competition (NEC), which is a part of UBA Foundation’s education initiative, and it is aimed at promoting the reading culture and encouraging healthy and intellectual competition amongst secondary school students in Nigeria and across Africa.

The Foundation has also increased the prize money for the 2020 edition of the NEC as the first prize winner will get an educational grant of N2.5m, up from N2m in 2019. The second and third prize winners will now receive N2m and N1.5m educational grants respectively, from N1.5m and N1m which were awarded in the previous year’s competition.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed that the tertiary institutions in the state be reopened effective from September 14th, 2020. He made this known during a briefing at the State House, Marina on Saturday. Sanwo-Olu also stated that after the ongoing WASSCE, primary and secondary schools in the state would also be permitted to reopen from September 21, 2020, for the resumption of academic activities.
