JAMB FIXES AUGUST 6th FOR MOP UP EXAMINATION.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed plans to hold a mop-up Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on Saturday, 6th August, 2022, for candidates who could not participate in the examinations during the period of the exercise for some genuine complaints.

STATISTICS OF JAMB APPLICANT FOR 2022 ADMISSION RELEASED BY JAMB
According to the data obtained from JAMB, no fewer than 1.8 million candidates sat for the 2022 UTME/Direct Entry examinations conducted by the admission body.

The 2022 statistics released from the recent policy meeting by the board and other officials, presents a complete breakdown of number of applicants per department/faculty as follows:

*367,499 candidates applied for medicine while only 43,717 slots exist in universities.

*81,653 applied for Law-related courses despite 8,529 vacancies available universities.

*103,891 students applied for technology-related courses with 60,199 slots available in universities.

*72,014 applied for courses under Arts and Humanities despite 48,744 slots exist in universities.

*Despite 111,601 vacancies existing for Education courses in all Nigerian universities, only 53,612 candidates applied.

*Despite the country’s universities having 31,217 vacancies for Agriculture, only 21,568 applied.

REPS MOVE TO INCREASE VALIDITY PERIOD OF JAMB RESULTS TO FOUR YEARS

The House of Representatives has passed for the second reading a bill to amend the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to increase the validity period of its results.

The bill sponsored by Tolulope Shadipe (APC, Oyo) seeks to amend sections 5(1a) and 5(2) of the principal act.

“The general control of the conduct of matriculation examinations and admissions to courses leading to the award of first degrees, higher national diploma, national diploma and Nigeria Certificate in Education by universities (by whatever name called), monotechnic/polytechnic (by whatever name called) in Nigeria shall be valid for four years,” the bill reads.

If the bill is passed, JAMB results will be valid for four years as against the current one-year period of validity.

Leading the debate, Ms Shadipe said the current law is exploitative with students forced to pay money annually despite passing the examination.
“Everywhere in the world, there’s no such examination that is valid for one year. Here in Nigeria, if don’t get in, you repeat JAMB again. It’s unfair. There are a lot of Nigerians whose parents are struggling to put their children through school,” she said.
Speaking against the bill, Uzoma Abonta (PDP, Abia) said it would create more crises. He argued that the sponsor of the bill failed to convince him of the mischief the bill seeks to cure.

Speaking in support of the bill, the presiding officer, Deputy Speaker Idris Wase, said the bill seeks to address the economic burden on parents.
The bill was passed for the second reading when Mr Wase put it to vote.

JAMB RELEASES 2022 CUT OFF MARK

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, on Thursday, approved cut-off marks for universities and polytechnics in the country.

The decision was taken after a heated session comprising officials from JAMB, the Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, and the National Board for Technical Education among others.

For the polytechnics, 120 cut-off mark was approved while 140 was approved for universities.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that the JAMB registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, at the 2022 policy meeting revealed that only 378,639 of the 1,761,338 who wrote the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations scored 200 and above.

Speaking further, Oloyede noted that the board allowed candidates with awaiting results to register for the 2022 UTME.

“JAMB allowed awaiting results candidates to register and sit for the 2022 UTME. These candidates can’t be considered for admission on awaiting result status. They must present their O’level results on the board’s portal before the commencement of admissions”.

- You need a minimum score of 200 to apply for most Federal Universities
- While if you are going for a state universities, you need a minimum score of 180.
