The maiden edition of TEDx Igbinedion University Okada held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the University Library Conference Hall, Main Campus, Okada, bringing together students, academics, innovators and thought leaders for inspiring conversations centered on leadership, innovation and personal development.

The event, themed “Beyond the Shores of Mediocrity,” featured insightful presentations from renowned speakers including the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, PhD, FAS, development advocate Chinenye Ebele Onuorah, Ambassador Dr. Smily Mukta and Chisom Rutherford.

Delivering a keynote presentation titled “Digital Intelligence: Leveraging Technology Without Losing Depth,” Prof. Ezemonye challenged participants to embrace technology responsibly while maintaining human values, creativity and intellectual depth. He emphasized that digital advancement should serve humanity rather than diminish critical thinking and meaningful human interaction.

The Vice-Chancellor described digital intelligence as the ability to effectively navigate technological tools without losing the essence of human reasoning, innovation and emotional connection. He urged young people to develop skills that combine technological competence with ethical leadership and purposeful living.

In her presentation titled “Beyond the Shores of Mediocrity: From the Angle of Leadership,” Chinenye Onuorah inspired participants with practical lessons on courage, initiative and transformational leadership. Drawing from her experience during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in a remote community in Cross River State, she narrated how her intervention in addressing poor healthcare challenges led to sustainable community impact and eventually birthed the Regalo Hope Foundation.

She stressed that true leadership begins when individuals move beyond comfort zones to solve problems and create opportunities for others. According to her, many people remain trapped in mediocrity because of fear and overdependence on familiarity rather than taking bold steps toward change.

The speakers collectively encouraged participants to cultivate leadership, innovation, courage and self-awareness as essential tools for societal transformation. They also emphasized the importance of using knowledge and technology to create lasting impact in communities.

The TEDx event marked another milestone in the university’s commitment to intellectual engagement, innovation and global conversations that empower young people to become solution-driven leaders.

IGBINEDION UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES 27TH FOUNDER’S DAY, CHARTS BOLD STRATEGIC VISION FOR FUTURE

Nigeria’s first private university, Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO), on Saturday, May 16, 2026, marked its 27th Founder’s Day with a grand celebration that reflected on its pioneering legacy while outlining ambitious plans for the future. The event, held at the University Library Conference Centre on the main campus, was attended by members of the Governing Council, management, faculty, students, alumni, development partners, traditional leaders, and other distinguished guests.

The highlight of the celebration was the Founder’s Day lecture delivered by renowned productivity consultant and business strategist Dr. Sam Ikoku, Chairman/CEO of Sam Ikoku Group and Managing Consultant at Nakachi Consulting. Titled “Keeping the University Dream in a Fragile Ecosystem,” the address challenged the University to reposition itself amid evolving challenges in Nigeria’s higher education sector.

Dr. Ikoku lauded the University’s founder, His Excellency Sir Chief Dr. Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, Esama of Benin Kingdom, for establishing Nigeria’s first private university in 1999, describing the move as one that altered the course of higher education in the country. He, however, warned that past achievements alone would not guarantee future success. Dr. Ikoku identified critical challenges facing private universities, such as inadequate funding and exclusion from intervention funds like TETFund, brain drain, aging infrastructure, rising operational costs, governance issues, and policy inconsistencies.

To overcome these hurdles, he proposed an eight-pillar “University 2.0 Model” focused on revenue diversification and financial resilience, academic excellence and specialization, faculty development and AI-assisted teaching, infrastructure modernization and energy independence, transparent governance and succession planning, research commercialization and innovation, corporate university development for workforce training, as well as the establishment of centres of excellence and thought leadership.

Dr. Ikoku recommended the creation of a ₦5 billion endowment fund, the launch of a Corporate University, the establishment of a Solar Technology Centre of Excellence, and stronger collaborations with government agencies, industry, and diaspora alumni. He called on the university leadership to develop and implement a comprehensive five-year transformation plan. “As Nigeria’s first private university, you do not merely have history, you have responsibility,” he declared.

In his welcome address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye described the occasion as a landmark moment, reflecting on the university’s growth from a bold vision in 1999 into one of Nigeria’s most respected private institutions.

Prof. Ezemonye paid tribute to the founder for his foresight and commitment to educational development. He noted that the university now runs seven colleges and three schools with over 96 accredited academic programmes. He highlighted key achievements, including expanded international collaborations and student exchange programmes in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Asia, the strengthening of entrepreneurial education and digital literacy, and ongoing infrastructure projects at the College of Pharmacy, student hostels, and the Teaching Hospital complex.

The Chancellor, represented by the Deputy Chancellor, Chief Dr. Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion, in his message, emphasized that Founder’s Day serves as a time for historical reflection, philosophical renewal, and collective accountability.

He commended the University for securing and maintaining full accreditations for all programmes, including Medicine, Law, and Engineering, while introducing new programmes in Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Renewable Energy Engineering to stay relevant in the 21st-century economy. He urged students to pursue excellence with discipline and called on management to sustain transparent and visionary leadership.

The 27th Founder’s Day celebration concluded with renewed optimism and a strong commitment by the university community to build on its legacy of academic excellence, innovation, and contribution to national development.

IGBINEDION UNIVERSITY HOSTS GEN. LUCKY IRABOR AS HE DEMANDS DATA-DRIVEN OVERHAUL OF NIGERIA’S SECURITY ARCHITECTURE

Former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor (Rtd), has called for a comprehensive and urgent overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture, advocating a decisive shift from reactive measures to a modern, data-driven, predictive, and technology-powered system. Irabor made this call while delivering the guest lecture at the 2026 Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan College of Arts and Social Sciences Annual Lecture Series held at Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State.

Speaking on the theme “Combating Insecurity in Nigeria: Artificial Intelligence and the Global Future,” the retired general described the occasion as a “national call to action.” He warned that Nigeria risks falling dangerously behind evolving security threats if it fails to fully embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies. The former defence chief painted a sobering picture of Nigeria’s security landscape, identifying terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and cybercrime as persistent and evolving threats that have severely disrupted daily life and significantly eroded public confidence in the state. “The persistence of insecurity in Nigeria has become one of the most pressing challenges confronting national development,” Irabor stated.

Drawing from his extensive military experience, he acknowledged that conventional operations have achieved some successes but emphasized that they are no longer sufficient to counter highly adaptive non-state actors. He noted that these groups have moved beyond traditional battlefields, increasingly leveraging digital tools for recruitment, coordination, and financing “Artificial Intelligence is no longer optional,” Irabor declared, stressing that AI has become a decisive factor in modern warfare, intelligence gathering, and national security management.

He highlighted global trends such as predictive analytics and autonomous surveillance systems, which enable real-time data processing and anticipatory response strategies. According to him, Nigeria must urgently adopt similar technologies to improve intelligence accuracy, enhance situational awareness, and facilitate faster, better-informed decision-making.
“AI enables systems to analyse vast volumes of data, detect patterns, and forecast threats at a scale impossible for human operators alone,” he said, adding that such capabilities could significantly bolster counter-terrorism operations and border security.

However, Irabor cautioned against over reliance on technology alone. He stressed the importance of accompanying technological adoption with institutional reforms, ethical safeguards, and human-centred policies. “How well we integrate AI with human insight, ethical considerations, and governance structures will determine its effectiveness. Without this balance, the risks of misuse and rights violations become real,” he warned.

The former Chief of Defence Staff also identified critical structural challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited technical expertise, and weak policy coordination, warning that failure to address these gaps could further widen the technological divide between Nigeria and more advanced nations.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye,PhD, FAS, reinforced the urgency of the theme. He called for an end to the nation’s traditionally reactive approach to security. “For too long, our national security conversation has been reactive, responding to attacks and counting losses. “The future of Nigeria’s security will be written in code and data, just as much as in courage and sacrifice,” Prof. Ezemonye said. He also commended the University’s Chancellor, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, for consistently promoting research-driven engagement on critical national issues, emphasizing that universities must serve as “fortresses of solutions” to Nigeria’s most pressing challenges.

FROM ROUTINE PAPERS TO REAL IMPACT: ADETUNJI URGES IGBINEDION UNIVERSITY SCHOLARS TO FOCUS ON GRANT-WINNING RESEARCH

Renowned Nigerian scientist Prof. Charles Adetunji, ranked among the world’s top 2% researchers, has challenged scholars to shift from routine academic publications to high-impact research that secures international grants and solves real societal problems. Prof. Adetunji delivered the charge as guest lecturer at a one-day workshop organized by the Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CNAS) at Igbinedion University Okada (IUO). The event, themed “Crafting the Grant-Winning Proposal: Research, Innovation and Grant Hunting,” took place on Friday at the University Library Conference Hall in Okada, Edo State.

He identified systemic institutional challenges such as administrative bottlenecks, delayed funding, and weak approval systems as the main barriers to research productivity in Nigeria, rather than individual expertise. “Research productivity is often constrained by institutional inefficiencies rather than intellectual limitations,” he said, calling for structural reforms in universities.

Adetunji proposed redefining research productivity as output multiplied by impact and divided by time, urging scholars to focus on quality, efficiency, and real-world applications. The professor emphasized that research should drive policy, innovation, community development, and progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in areas like poverty, health, clean energy, and climate change.

Igbinedion University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, PhD, FAS, stated that the institution is intensifying its focus on research and global competitiveness. He announced the appointment of Prof. Adetunji as Visiting Professor in the College to boost its research ecosystem.
