PROF. BASSEY DEMANDS BETTER WORKING OUT-PUT

The Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Prof. Francisca Bassey, has demanded for a better working output from staff. She sued for this commitment, on Monday, May 12, 2025, during an interactive session held with staff of the Department of Estate and Works, in her office.
The Ag. VC, who sought to be availed with the challenges facing the component units of the department, was told by Mr. Lawrence Omet David, Head of Casual Workers, that effective work in his area was being mitigated by inadequate staffing, the proliferation of shops leading to difficulty in waste management and poor salary for the workers.

Contributing, Arc. Ibe Emmanuel, Head of Building Services, identified inadequate staffing and absence of working tools as his unit's major challenge, while Mr. Asuquo Effiong, Head of Electricals, said his unit was met with the problem of uneven supply of light across the campus due to low capacity generators, lack of working tools and shortage of staff. He appealed for the unused transformer at the Administrative Block to be deployed for use at the water factory. On his part, Engr. Irek Johnson, Head of Welding and Air conditioners, outlined the lack of staff and working tools as the main problems confronting his unit, while Mr. Patrick Ijakpa, Head of Power House, enumerated the challenges faced by his unit to include; the poor state of generators, shortage of labour and the abandonment of one 500KAV generator, which he said had the right capacity to stem the power challenge in Calabar campus.

Summarily, the Director of Works, Mr. Alfred Iwara, immensely, thanked the Ag. VC for the singular opportunity granted his department to bare their minds, pointing out that the demands put forward by them had already been collated and presented to management.
Responding, the Ag. VC declared that management will give immediate attention to demands requiring urgent action but decried the flood of exorbitant estimates usually forwarded by staff of the department. She called for more realistic bills from the department, bearing in mind the scarce resources available to the University.
The event was concluded with a group photograph.

UNICROSS ACTING VC EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER DAMAGE OF UNIVERSITY STUCTURES AFTER RAINSTORM IN CALABAR

The Acting Vice Chancellor of University of Cross River State, Professor Francisca Bassey, has expressed concern over the gravity of damage of the University's structures recorded in the wake of the rainstorm which swept through Calabar city on the 7th of May, 2025.
The Acting Vice Chancellor who was represented by the Director of Administration, Professor Tom Ojikpong, expressed this concern when she led members of the University's management team on an on-the-spot inspection of the affected buildings in Calabar campus of the University.

Yesterday's fierce rainstorm partially affected some offices including the conference room in the Administrative Building housing the Vice Chancellor's office.
Other affected buildings are: the University's Library, Student Affairs building, Biological Science building, Environmental Studies building, New Science Block A, JAMB/CBT center, former Post Graduate School building, Mass Communication old block and the New Auditorium of the University.

Meanwhile, the New Auditorium looked good last week when it hosted an interactive session between officials of NELFUND and students of the University.
That was the first official event held in that auditorium.
The auditorium looked ready to serve as venue of similar important events but recorded the worst damage in yesterday's rainstorm.

While speaking with other members of the University's Management team, the Acting Vice Chancellor expressed the need to immediately repair what is not beyond repairs and replace what may need replacement.
Consequently, the Acting Vice Chancellor told the Director of Works, Engr. (Dr) Alfred Iwara, to immediately mobilize the Works Department to do the needful, lest further rains cause more damage.
The Registrar, Mr. Victor Ene; the Bursar, Mr. Ebom Ekpe; the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Onen Ebri Onen and the Director of Audit, Mr. Nzan Osim, accompanied the Acting Vice Chancellor on the inspection.
Professor (Mrs) Akon Joshua, former Acting Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS and member of the University's Governing Council, was also at the new auditorium to witness the extent of damage there.

UNICROSS Acting VC Holds Family Meeting With Students

The Acting Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Professor Francisca Bassey, has held what she described as a family meeting with the Student Union Government body and other leaders of Student Associations in the University.
The meeting held two days ago in her office.
It is the first meeting in the second semester of 2024/2025 session which began yesterday.

During the meeting, the Acting Vice Chancellor reviewed the first semester and stated that despite the challenges encountered, substantive progress was made in the areas of upload of results and fee payments.
She attributed the success recorded to teamwork, stating that since her administration came on board, members of the Management Team and other staff of UNICROSS have been working tirelessly to tackle the various challenges she met.
She added that no single person can take credit for the achievements that have been made.

She identified processing and uploading of backlogs of results, late payment of school fees and the inability to meet deadlines for various registrations by students, as some of the challenges that her administration met.
The Acting Vice Chancellor emphasized that the University's Management will ensure that everything gets right and also ensure that students graduate when they are supposed to graduate.
She promised that the mop-up examination results of 2023/2024 academic session would be published soon.

The Acting Vice Chancellor promised that some of the anomalies in UNICROSS would be a thing of the past and enjoined members of the Student Union Government and other leaders of students to convey this positive information to their colleagues.
She said: "Give your colleagues good orientation. Timelines should always be kept. I have never joked with the welfare of children. But at the same time, I am firm and strict. Pampering a child will never give you the result you need. Pampering students on campus will never give the University the output it needs.
We must balance it. You need to attend lectures and submit assignments on time. Stop sorting. If there is nobody to give sorting, nobody will collect sorting. For the girls, don't trade your bodies for marks. If you attend lectures and if you turn in assignment and pass exams, nobody will exploit you."

She expressed gratitude to the SUG body for cooperating with the University's Management this past semester and said: “We fought, yet we made it. Despite disagreements, we made peace.”
She prayed that God would continue to guide and protect the students.

On his part, the Registrar of UNICROSS, Mr. Victor Ene, encouraged the students to avail themselves of the benefits of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) by applying for the loan.

In his vote of thanks at the meeting, Ibeng Lazarus, President of Student Union Government, appreciated the Acting Vice Chancellor and other members of the University's Management Team for the interface with students.
He added that this will ensure that peace reigns across all campuses of UNICROSS.

On his part, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ekpeyong Nyong, commended UNICROSS Management for being able to weather the storm of the past semester successfully.

The meeting was held in a relaxed and very convivial mood, spiced with surprises.
A highpoint of this very good development was the moment the Acting Vice Chancellor vacated her official seat and invited Emmanuel Olom, the President of Presidents of Faculties, to take over the seat and act as Acting Vice Chancellor for five minutes.
During his "tenure in office as Acting Vice Chancellor for the Acting Vice Chancellor", Emmanuel Olom declared a one-day postponement of GSS registration for the benefit of those who missed the deadline.
The University's Management team unanimously upheld the declaration.
This unrehearsed development received a spontaneous standing ovation from everyone at the meeting.

The Director of Administration, Professor Tom Ojikpong, the Bursar, Dr. Ebom Ekpe; the Public Relations Officer, Mr. One Ebri Onen, the Librarian, Dr. Mrs Victoria Iyishu, and the Director of Exams and Results, Dr Anderson Etika were also present at the meeting.
