KEY POINTS EVERY JAMBITE MUST KNOW WHEN CHOOSING A COURSE
1 Know Yourself First
Understand your strengths and weaknesses (e.g. Are you better at science, writing, or business?)
Consider your interests and passion — not just what’s trending.
Ask: Can I still enjoy this course 5 years from now?
2 Don’t Choose a Course Based on Pressure
Avoid following friends or family expectations blindly.
Study something aligned with your purpose, not popularity.
"My friend chose Nursing" is not a reason — your destiny differs.
3 Understand What Each Course Really Involves
Research the real meaning of the course — not just the name.
Check what subjects are studied in that field.
Know what kind of jobs or career paths it leads to.
(Example: Mass Comm ≠ only TV presenting; there’s PR, advertising, journalism, etc.)
4 Check Subject Combination
Always verify JAMB & O’Level requirements for your chosen course.
Many students lose admission because of wrong subject combinations.
Example: Medicine needs English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics — not Mathematics.
5 Consider School Cut-off Marks
Each university/polytechnic has a different cut-off.
Some schools are more competitive than others.
Be strategic — you can still get your dream course in a less competitive school.
6 Know Admission Requirements (UTME + Direct Entry)
Check if the school accepts two sittings for O’Level.
Know if Post-UTME or Screening will be written.
If you plan to switch courses later, research the transfer policy.
7 Career Opportunities Matter
Ask: “What can I do with this course after school?”
Some courses open doors to multiple careers, others are narrow.
Look for courses that combine your passion + opportunities.
8 Know the Competition Level
Medicine, Law, Nursing, Engineering = very competitive.
Consider similar alternatives:
Medicine → Anatomy, Physiology, Biomedical Science
Law → Political Science, Criminology, Public Administration.
9 Be Honest About Your JAMB Score Goal
If you can’t score 300+, you can still plan smartly.
Choose a backup course in case your dream one becomes too competitive.
Remember, admission is not the end — you can always cross later.
10. Pray & Seek Guidance
Don’t leave God out. Sometimes the course that looks “small” becomes your biggest door.
Talk to mentors, older students, and career counselors.
Combine wisdom, purpose, and prayer.
