PROHIBITION OF ANY FORM OF GATHERING IN THE UNIVERSITY

I am directed to remind students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma that with the completion of the second semester examinations and the conclusion of the 2021/2022 academic session, Ambrose University, Ekpoma is on break and students have earlier been directed to vacate Halls of Residence.

As the University is making plans towards the take off of the 2022/2023 academic session, no student is expected to be on campus for whatever reason.

Any student found loitering around the campus and the hostels is only doing so at his or her own risk. Parents are therefore advised to call their children home until they are requested to resume for academic activities.

Two circulars had earlier been issued to the effect that students should vacate the Halls of Residence. This peesent one is a reaffirmation of those directives.
I hereby reiterate that students should vacate the school hostels, and indeed the University as there is no academic activities going on at the moment.

Any unauthorised gathering and loitering within the premises of the University is prohibited. All law abiding students should stay away from such gatherings and go home to their parents.

Any inordinate and politically motivated rallies, gatherings, protests or demonstrations will not be taken lightly as they will not be in the best interest of the University, the students and society. This must be avoided at all costs.
Dialogue remains the best way out in any given situation.

Thank you

Signed
Ambrose E. Odiase
Acting Registrar

Education: Obaseki Launches Learning Agenda

By Ogbemudia Mari James

Benin City: Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has stressed the importance of data gathering, analysis and evaluation in achieving quality education in the 21st century.
The governor who made this remark Thursday in Benin City while officially launching the Edo State Learning Agenda, at Day-2 of the ongoing Edo Education Week, said data are more valuable than crude oil. He added that the result of data gathered in the state education sector was responsible for the launch of Edo 2.0.

Obaseki stated that the Edo 2.0 programme has positively affected the value of education in the state, noting that the Edo 2.0 has made it possible for teaching and learning by teachers, students and pupils to be centrally monitored.

While disclosing that sustaining the progress made so far in the education sector informed the launch of the Learning Agenda, the governor said part of the agenda is to make every Edo child a reading champion at age ten.
The governor said the concern of his administration is not just how to get school children learn how to read and write, but also to make them learn and acquire skills. According to him, Learning for skills is very important because we realize that it is not every child that can make it to tertiary institution.

Obaseki who thanked the Federal Government for establishing a Federal Technical College in Edo State where teachers and students will be technically trained, noted that the importance of technical education in the 21st century cannot be overemphasized.
Speaking earlier, the Edo State commissioner of Education, Joan Osa Oviawe who remarked that the state was desirous to give every Edo child a complete education where they can learn their mother tongues, pointed out that, the state government was committed to bringing back value to our education system.
The education commissioner revealed that as part of plans to ensure that every edo child acquire basic education the state government had earlier launched the School Oclock, a programme which according to her was designed to ensure that no child of school age is seen loitering, hawking or gallivanting around during school hours.

The Acting Vice Chancellor, Ambrose Alli University, Prof. Asomwan Sonnie Adagbonyin led other management staff of AAU, Professors, Deans, Heads of Departments, Directors amongst others to the event which was also graced by other dignitaries such as the representative of the Oba of Benin, Representative of the President of Sierra Leone, Lagos state Commissioner for Education, among others.

The event featured panel discussions, presentation of prizes/awards to deserving schools, goodwill messages, arts and photo exhibitions. Highlight of the ceremony was the inspection of exhibitions from Ambrose Alli University by the governor who was guided by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Asomwan Sonnie Adagbonyin.

Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, shines again!!!

The Webometric Ranking of world Universities, an *initiative* of the cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC), the largest public research body in *Spain,* has released the 2023 *webometrics* ranking for *over* 30000 institutions .

In the recent webometric ranking of 284 Nigerian *degree awarding institutions,* Ambrose Alli University ranked 37. It should be noted that in 2021, the University was not ranked amongst the 100 Nigerian Universities. It was only in 2022 that the institution was ranked 40 amongst other universities in Nigeria.

This new *feat* is attributed to the efforts of the Prof. A.S. Adagbonyin-led administration in restructuring the ICT *capability* of the University.

It is worthy of note that very recently, the University *started* teaching and conducting her continuous assessment (CA) on the Learning Management System (LMS), which has significantly increased our global visibility.

“The Ranking Web or Webometrics is the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions offering every six months an independent, objective, free, open scientific exercise for providing reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world.” https://webometrics.info/en/Methodology.

* The Ranking Web is not a ranking of the websites of Universities, it is a Ranking of Universities. It uses both webometric (all missions) and bibliometric (research mission) indicators

AMBROSE ALLI UNIVERSITY, EKPOMA
PRESS RELEASE
ON THE SITUATION IN AMBROSE ALLI UNIVERSITY

The Ambrose Alli University Management is aware of the various news items circulating in both print and electronic media relating to the sack and disengagement of some academic staff of the University.

Management wishes to state as follows:

1. That contrary to the reports making the rounds, only two staff were affected – one (unconfirmed staff) disengaged and the other retired.

2. That the retirement and disengagement, respectively, of the two staff are decisions of the Special Intervention Team (SIT) as contained in the letters issued to the staff concerned.

3. That this decision was taken in the best interest of the University. However, Management acknowledges the Government press release issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Projects on the matter.

4. That the University dissociates itself from the list of 22 names or any other list whatsoever purported to be pencilled down for sack by the University Management, as being mischievously bandied in the public space.

5. That Management is investigating the source of the said list of 22 names and other lists flying around purported to have emanated from the University and will take appropriate disciplinary measures against anyone found to be the source of the mischievously circulating document.

6. That Management is not unmindful of the high level of propaganda being unleashed by political actors, using the University as cannon fodder.

7. That for the avoidance of doubt the controversial issue of salary payments has been sufficiently addressed with the payment of February, 2023 salaries to over 2,662 staff and pensioners of the University. In the past few hours, both teaching and non-teaching staff of the University who returned to work after the suspension of strike in August and October, 2022, respectively, and were hitherto not captured in the payroll, have been receiving alert.

8. That Management reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that peace and harmony reigns supreme in Ambrose Alli University and will continue to commit to the welfare of its staff and students.

9. That Management urges all staff to go about their normal duties in an atmosphere of freedom and safety and without fear of molestation

10. That Management appreciates the efforts of the Edo State Government in the repositioning of the University and will not detract from it.

PRESS RELEASE:

ON THE SALARY SITUATION IN AMBROSE ALLI UNIVERSITY, EKPOMA

With all the self-prepared “news reports”, sponsored protests, deliberate misrepresentations, false claims and unmitigated propaganda launched over the past few months on the public space by a few persons against the Management of the Ambrose Alli University, the Special Intervention Team and the Edo State Government, it is expedient that Management sets the record straight on the issue of salary payment in the University for the benefit of the University community and members of the public.

Management considers it strange that with all the efforts it has made over the months in the payment of salaries, a group of politicians’ poster boys would still come out and describe the payment as “rumour”, “selective”, etc. The latest payment of February, 2023 salaries is a case in point. It is certainly beyond “rumour” that over 2,260 regular staff and pensioners have received their February, 2023 salaries as at today March 9, 2023, including some of the academics making all the loud unintellectual noises in defense of falsehood. The records are there for everyone to see and Management may be compelled to publish the list of those who have so far been paid.

It is no longer news that this present University administration has been paying gross salaries since December 2021. Before it came on board in February, 2022 available records showed that the last gross salary payment was in 2020. Salaries and the check-offs for December 2021 and January and February 2022 were paid by the present administration to the various welfare schemes, including the AAU Workers/Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative Society. From April 2022 to January 2023, all salaries, including gross and the deductions hitherto made and paid to the Unions, were paid to the staff concerned. Because of the abuse of privilege by the unions, staff were enjoined to pay whatever dues accrued to them upon the receipt of the salaries to whatever union owner scheme they belonged.

Again, all staff of the University who were verified to have returned to work at the time the Edo State Government directed them to do so, have received their salaries to date.
All staff who failed to return to work on the directive of the government and were away on strike for eight months have not received salaries for those months they did not work. This is in line with the no-work-no-pay policy directed by Government. It is absurd that these self-serving agitators still add up these eight months as salaries due them, when they knew they did not work for them, and when they can see that even their counterparts in Federal Universities have been unable to convince the government at the centre to pay them for work not done.

However, in spite of this, Management acting on the magnanimity and directive of Government has now captured in the University payroll all staff who preferred to wait for the directive of their unions before returning to work. Majority of such staff have received the February, 2023 salaries. Their arrears of salaries from the time they resumed work on the directive of their unions are being computed, and would be paid as directed by the government.

Management wishes to stress that all persons who have been removed from the payroll, and declared “ghost workers” on account of their refusal to appear before the staff verification and biometric exercise, have no claim to any salary.

On this, we need to remind all that the Edo State Government approved a staff verification and biometric exercise to determine the number and status of staff in the University payroll and to decide whether the University needed any upward review of subvention or otherwise in 2021. But rather than comply, ASUU, AAU questioned the exercise and directed its members to boycott it. The exercise scheduled to last for 3 weeks lasted for 6 months. It was ASUU, AAU that took the case to the National Industrial Court (NIC), to question the right of the government to carry out such an exercise.

It is common knowledge that the above case has long been disposed of and the verdict is that the Government has a right to carry out staff verification and biometric exercise and a right not only to carry out this exercise, but to mete out any disciplinary action against defaulters.

It is worth noting that the present Management appealed to SIT to prevail on Government to further extend the period of the biometric verification to enable staff who had not been captured have the opportunity to do so. When this was granted, ASUU, AAU prevented its members from participating. The letters written to this effect as well as the press releases are in the public space.

Also worthy of note is the fact that while he rallied his members not to participate in the biometric exercise, the ASUU, AAU Chairman, Dr. Cyril Onogbosele, surreptitiously went to participate in the exercise, presented his First School Leaving Certificate, got his print out and received his salaries for the period, the latest being the present February, 2023 salary. It is interesting to note that he thereafter went ahead to discourage his members from further participating in the exercise.

As at now, Ambrose Alli University has restored check-offs to aAU Workers/Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative Society, and the backlog of check-offs from September, 2020 to November, 2021 is being worked out for payment to the Cooperative Society. To this effect, the SIT has constituted a Check-Off Verification Committee. All checkoffs to other bodies are also now being verified.

Management hereby states in unequivocal terms that the claims by ASUU, AAU that a 27-month checkoff is owed to them is untrue. The arithmetic surely does not add up; the same applies to the allegation that Management is doing selective salary payment. For what purpose? It should be glaring from the facts above that salaries are being paid in line with the laid down procedures and in absolute subversion of the age-old entitlement mentality that even if one decided to stay at home for eight months, Government must calculate the money and pay you. Unfortunately, the train left the station long ago and that era is over.

Management remains committed to its set goal of repositioning Ambrose Alli University in line with the vision of the Edo State Government. It will not be cowed or intimidated by the fusillade of sponsored attacks on it by a few disgruntled persons using ASUU, AAU as banner or cover. We know the salary “crisis” being said to exist in AAU by this band of agitators exists only in their hearts as they seek to reap eight months salary even when they did not work for it. We will continue the effort to pay salaries as and when due to those who have worked for them.

Ambrose E. Odiase, FIPMA, MANUPA, MAUA
Acting Registrar,
For & on behalf of the University Management
