.𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆; 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟯 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀.

𝑰𝑵𝑻𝑹𝑶𝑫𝑼𝑪𝑻𝑰𝑶𝑵

Oftentimes among Catholics when we try to know what distinguishes our faith from the Protestants and Evangelical denominations, we naturally think of the Mass. While Catholics attend the Holy mass, other Christians attend service. The beauty of the Church is that it is 𝐶𝐴𝑇𝐻𝑂𝐿𝐼𝐶, 𝑂𝑁𝐸, 𝐻𝑂𝐿𝑌 𝐴𝑁𝐷 𝐴𝑃𝑂𝑆𝑇𝑂𝐿𝐼𝐶 amidst its diverse history of liturgical traditions. There are Twenty-four (24) unique "Sui iuris" Churches within this one Catholic Church.

𝑬𝑿𝑷𝑳𝑨𝑵𝑨𝑻𝑰𝑶𝑵 𝑶𝑭 𝑻𝑬𝑹𝑴𝑺

𝑆𝑢𝑖 𝑖𝑢𝑟𝑢𝑠: A Latin phrase used in law which literally means of its own right. It is used to explain that the legal status of an institution or entity is not comparable to anything else, and there are special laws that guides such institutions. Example the Eastern Catholic Church which has its own government and laws but still recognize the Pope of Rome as their spiritual leader.

𝙍𝙞𝙩𝙚: According to Canon 28, a rite is the liturgical, theological, spiritual and disciplinary patrimony, culture and circumstances of history of a distinct people by which its own manner of living the faith is manifested in each Church Sui iuris.

𝘾𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙘𝙝: Canon 27 explains Church as a group of Christian faithfuls united by a hierarchy according to the norm of law which the Supreme authority of the Church expressly or tacitly recognizes as Sui iuris is called in this code a Church Sui iuris.

𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙒𝙀𝙎𝙏𝙀𝙍𝙉 𝘾𝙃𝙐𝙍𝘾𝙃.

The Western Church has only one rite which is commonly known to many as the Roman Rite or Latin Rite. This is the largest Rite within the Church. The head of this Church is the Pope, Vicar of Jesus Christ. The Latin Rite is expressed within 3 liturgies:

1. Tridentine (Traditional Latin Mass
2. Novus Ordo (Post-Vatican II Mass said in the vernacular)
3. Anglican Use.

𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙀𝘼𝙎𝙏𝙀𝙍𝙉 𝘾𝙃𝙐𝙍𝘾𝙃.

The Eastern Church has 23 liturgical rites or Churches. The Catechism of the Catholic Church mentioned 7 rites which makes up the 23 rites. The highest ranking bishop in the Eastern Church is the Patriarch and they are submissive to the Pope.
