NBTE TEAM VISITS GBOKO POLYTECHNIC FOR ODFEL RESOURCE INSPECTION AND ACCREDITATION

A delegation from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), led by Dr. Aliyu Hassan, on Monday paid an official visit to Gboko Polytechnic, Gboko (GPG) for the purpose of resource inspection and accreditation towards the approval of Open Distance and Flexible E-Learning (ODFEL) programmes.
The NBTE team was warmly received by the Rector of Gboko Polytechnic, Engr. Hyacinth Abanyam, alongside the Director of the Directorate of Open, Distance and Flexible E-Learning (ODFEL), Dr. S. T. Atindiga, as well as other principal officers, management staff, and members of the academic community.
In his address, the team leader, Aliyu Hassan, delivered what many described as a historical and insightful speech, tracing the evolution of Open Distance and Flexible E-Learning in Nigeria. He highlighted the initial conceptualization of ODFEL, the numerous challenges encountered in its early stages, and the strategic measures adopted by NBTE to overcome these hurdles. Dr. Hassan further explained the current progress of the initiative and outlined the Board’s vision for its future development, emphasizing the importance of technology-driven education in expanding access and improving learning outcomes.
He also elaborated on the mission of NBTE regarding the accreditation exercise, noting that the visit was aimed at assessing the institution’s readiness in terms of infrastructure, manpower, and technological capacity to effectively deliver ODFEL programmes. Following his remarks, he introduced members of his team to the Polytechnic community.
Responding, the Rector, Engr. Hyacinth Abanyam, expressed profound appreciation to the NBTE delegation for their visit and commended Dr. Hassan for his comprehensive historical overview of ODFEL. He reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation, noting that Gboko Polytechnic is fully prepared to embrace modern learning approaches in line with global best practices.
Subsequently, the Director of ODFEL, Dr. S. T. Atindiga, led the visiting team on a guided tour of the Polytechnic’s facilities, including ICT centres, lecture studios, administrative offices, and other relevant infrastructure put in place to support flexible learning.
At the end of the inspection tour, the NBTE team expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness demonstrated by the institution, commending its efforts and expressing optimism ahead of the next phase of the accreditation exercise scheduled for the following day.
The visit also featured a brief interactive session between the NBTE team and members of the academic staff, during which issues relating to curriculum delivery, student engagement, and technological adaptation were discussed.
The session was thereafter adjourned to continue the accreditation process tomorrow.
