SMEDAN Rewards Winners Of Global Entrepreneurship Contest -
The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) yesterday in Abuja made good its pledge to reward Nigeria’s representatives to this year’s 2013 Students for Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE) World Cup competition held last weekend with the sum of N500, 000 annual pledge.
The country’s representatives at the annual event, the University of Calabar International Secondary School (UCISS), Calabar, and Junior Secondary School, JSS, Jikwoyi, Abuja finished ahead of 16 other countries in the global entrepreneurship competition to clinch the much coveted trophy.
JSS, Jikwoyi finished in the top spot in the Social Enterprises Business (SEB) category, with China trailing behind, while UCISS took the second position in the Socially Responsible Business (SRB) category which China won.
Director- General of SMEDAN, Alhaji Bature Masari, who described the feat as breath-taking especially in view of the challenges in the environment , said the annual award instituted by the agency was to encourage and spur entrepreneurial spirit among students in the country.
Presenting a cash award of N300, 000 (JSS Jikwoyi)and N200, 000(UCISS Calabar), respectively , the DG commended the students for bringing so much honour to their schools and the country in general adding that their victory was a strong signal to the world.
“We decided to initiate the award to serve as a catalyst for the promotion and development of entrepreneurship in students and youths in general, across the country.
“What we are introducing will be sustained and whoever that goes to the SAGE and emerges first or second, will be encouraged by this kind of cash award,” he said.
The DG , who said the agency has decided to adopt JSS Jikwoyi as a model school as it seeks to promote entrepreneurship education in the Nigerian education system as a measure to address the problem of unemployment and strategically position the economy for leadership in Africa, assured that SMEDAN would assist in equipping the school’s SAGE Entrepreneurial Development Centre (SEDC) built by the students with a view to further developing the small and medium enterprises in the country and reaching the unreached especially in the rural areas.
President of Sage Nigeria, Mr Agwu Amogu, thanked the SMEDAN for living up to its promise and assured that the money would used judiciously to promote the development of entrepreneurship in the award winning schools.
