UI VC Commends itel Energy for Donating Hybrid Inverter System to the UI Students Representative Council Chamber

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, has commended itel Energy for donating a hybrid inverter system to the Student Representative Council Chambers in the student union building of the university.

He said that itel Energy's contribution will make a positive impact, not only on the students but the entire university.

At the handing over of the project which also signalled the commencement of an itel Solar Energy Training programme, the Vice-Chancellor appreciated the contributions of itel Energy to the educational system and society.

Professor Adebowale said the uninterrupted power supply will engender a renewed commitment to the reading culture, which is a catalyst to academic excellence.

He appreciated the benevolence of the organisation, saying that UI has begun an enduring relationship that will transform into future collaborations with itel Energy.

He stated that the university administration will soon commence the renovation of the SRC Chambers to complement the effort of itel Energy, saying that UI is passionate about providing a conducive atmosphere for its students leaders.

He charged the students to imbibe a maintenance culture in achieving the durability of the solar system, which was stipulated to have a 10-year life span.

The Technical Director of itel Africa, Mr Christian Hu, expressed appreciation to the university management for creating a platform to support the students in order to assist them in their academic pursuits.

He explained that itel Energy is a subsidiary of itel Africa in Nigeria that focuses on solar technology.

Mr Hu said that itel Energy will offer solar energy theory and practical training, offer job opportunities, scholarships, and internship placement to students of the University of Ibadan.

He added that the donation of the hybrid inverter system and establishment of a solar training centre at the University of Ibadan is a corporate social responsibility of the organisation, and the training will be held at scheduled times every Wednesday

UI'S ADMISSION: NO CONNECTION, NO CORRUPTION

Sunday Saanu (The Punch, 20/05/2025)
Without any fear of contradiction, one can confidently assert that of all public policies, processes, and procedures in Nigeria, admission policy of University of Ibadan (UI) is one the few national policies that are as transparent as glass. The policy is devoid of neither connection nor corruption. This is no exaggeration, neither is it stated to draw undeserved applause. It is one policy that has gained public trust over the years. Parents are students of the university can testify to the fact that, you don't need to know anybody in UI before you gain admission to study there. It remains a national patrimony which still holds aloft the culture of honesty, transparency, hard work and diligence. I hope when some commentators generally claim that admission in higher institutions in Nigeria are for sale, they will exclude UI.
University of Ibadan is an archetypal post colonial institution with a vast reservoir of human capital with multiple skills. Till date, it is the first and the best university in Nigeria with the highest number of professors in the country . There is no country across the world that there is no UI products, holding important positions and dictating the pace. Indeed, it is a prestigious brand which has a high equity, even in global context. This is a University that has produced, in the last 76 years of its existence, global giants in arts, science, engineering and every other human endeavour, whose contributions to national and international developments are invaluable.
However, in consonance with the spirit and letters of its anthem; UI is committed to social justice and equal chance for every Nigerian youth, seeking to drink from its intellectual ocean by creating a transparent admission policy that is devoid of corruption and connection-social viruses that destroy virtues and values in the country. Interestingly, there are three reasons that have compelled me to revisit the joy of transparent admission policy of this Nigeria's premier university.
One, many Nigerians do not believe that there could be a national policy in this country that would not be tainted with bribes, corruption, connection and political considerations and ethic bigotry. UI scores a good point here. And, credit must be given to the successive administrations, including the current Prof. Kayode Adebowale led regime for preserving the envious historical template of this institution. I have been in this system for the past 24 years. I have witnessed various methods of admission policies. Nobody, to the best of my knowledge, can say somebody collected money from him to give him admission. UI admission policy is purely merit-driven.
The process is known to everyone. Every card is laid on the table. If you didn't get 200 and above from Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination, don't approach UI for admission consideration, even if you are from President Bola Tinubu. If you scored 388 in JAMB exam and got 49 from UI's Post University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) test, go back to your house even if you are from Donald Trump. Nobody can help your case. The reason for this logic is simple. Available spaces for admission are few and they are meant for the best. UI is interested in picking the best out of the best candidates. Consequently, if you are not sure footed, try your luck elsewhere. For example, according to the VC, Prof. Adebowale, " out of 22,000 applicants who sought admission, last year, only 4,650 were offered provisional admission, and 4,215 were successfully cleared to become bonafide students of the university" That is UI's story. Only the best of the best admission seekers are welcome in UI.
And, that leads me to the second reason I am writing on this subject matter: parents' joy and appreciation. At the recent matriculation ceremony in UI, I came across many parents who commended UI for its transparent admission policy. They praised the management profusely. They confessed that they knew nobody in UI, yet, UI gave admission to their children. They thought admission in UI could only be possible with connection with those in positions of influence. Sadly, I have lost many friends who blamed me for the failure of their children to get admission in UI. They erroneously thought one could just squeeze some currency notes into an envelope and bribe admission people to secure a place. Not in UI.
Interestingly, this leads me to the third reason of writing this article: celebration of my niece who got admission to study Medicine and Surgery in UI without my involvement. This brilliant niece of mine, Goodness Akinsanya applied to study Medicine in 2023, got aggregate of 76. 25 while the cut off mark for Medicine was 79. She missed the admission narrowly. It was so painful. We tried to change to another course, Goodness refused th

UI Don Advocates the Establishment of a National Animal Arboviral Diseases Early Warning System

A Professor of Veterinary Microbiology at the University of Ibadan, Professor Daniel Oladimeji Oluwayelu has called for the establishment of a National Animal Arboviral Diseases Early Warning System (NAADEWS) in Nigeria.

He made this call while delivering the 579th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Ibadan on behalf of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

According to him, this establishment will reduce the burden of arboviral livestock diseases in Nigeria by gathering and disseminating information about arboviral disease emergencies, thus triggering appropriate responses from stakeholders.

The inaugural lecturer in his lecture titled: “Foray into the World of Viruses: The Steps of the Righteous are Ordered” stated that viruses impact both animal and human health as well as profitable livestock production negatively.

He, therefore, advocated a continuous surveillance for endemic, emerging, and zoonotic/arthropod-borne viral diseases in domestic livestock and companion animals because of their importance in human diets, their expanding populations nationwide and their increased interactions with humans.

Professor Oluwayelu adduced that tick-and mosquito-borne viruses of domestic livestock pose severe threats to global food security, economies of nations and public health due to their negative consequences on human and animal health as well as farmers' productivity.

He disclosed that these zoonotic arboviruses cause fever, hemorrhagic disorders, abortions and death in infected persons, especially occupationally exposed individuals such as butchers, abattoir workers, herders and veterinarians.

The Inaugural Lecturer stated that the consideration of arboviral diseases like West Nile Fever in the differential diagnosis of undifferentiated febrile illness by Physicians in Nigeria since its clinical presentation, could be mistaken for malaria or typhoid fever that are endemic in the country.

Two University of Ibadan Students Win French Embassy's "Get Creative With Plastic" Challenge

The University of Ibadan has achieved a remarkable milestone as two of its students emerged winners in the "Get Creative with Plastic" Challenge, a part of the French Embassy’s Plastic Free Campus Awareness Initiative.

UI was one of the ten Nigerian universities selected to participate in this initiative which is funded by the French Embassy Fund (FEF) Project.

The initiative was championed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. K. O. Adebowale, mni, FAS and coordinated through the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships), Prof. Oluyemisi Bamgbose, SAN, with support from Prof. P. O. Olapegba (DVC Administration), Prof. Aderonke M. Baiyeroju (DVC Academics), and the Registrar, Mr. G. O. Saliu.

Prof. Aina O. Adeogun of the Department of Zoology served as the focal person for the UI-FEF Campus Wide Initiative.

Working closely with the Students’ Union Executive Committee, Directirate of Public Communication, and Informatiom Technology and Media Services Unit, the team ensured robust student engagement and wide participation across the university community.

The University of Ibadan's contribution stood out significantly with over 300 students actively participating and more than 100 creative submissions in the Challenge. UI recorded the highest level of engagement among all participating campuses, a feat that can only be from UI as the “First and the Best”.

Due to this extraordinary commitment, the university became the only university among the ten to have two winners in the Challenge:

• Paul Debbie – a 300 level student of the Department of Environmental Health Science, Faculty of Public Health – Music Category

• Adekunle Julius Akorede - a 300 level student of the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences – Writing Category.

This recognition underscores the University of Ibadan's leadership and sustained excellence in addressing plastic pollution and environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
