DEMOCRACY DAY: DEMOCRACY IN FOSSU; ITS STATE, CONSEQUENCES AND MY ROLE
“No matter where ever in the world, when democracy is outrightly practised, growth and development becomes a natural condition of mankind, and reward for such is priceless.”
I adopt the above personal statement to commend and salute our fathers and past heroes whom efforts birthed the democracy we enjoyed today, even if it's not at its best. They had well played their roles in ensuring an orderly and liveable society/world for humankind.
I seize this medium to convey my DEMOCRACY GREETINGS to all citizens of our great nation, Nigeria. May God soften our minds, guide our thoughts and strengthen our wills to ensure and practice a true democracy in our country and our respective localities.
The state of the nation's democracy, the roles of we, the youth, the clamour of common Nigerians and our hope for the future have been the main activators of my decision to comment on the dissatisfactory state of democracy our dear Union's (Federation of Oyo State Students' Union), its implications/consequences and myself as well as individual's roles.
MEANING OF DEMOCRACY:
Democracy as it has its origins in Greek words “demos” and “kratos” can literally be defined as a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of of a state, typically through elected representatives. It is the control of an organisation or group by the majority of its members (Oxford Dictionary).
According to Merriam-Webster, democracy means government by the people i.e majority rules. It is a government in which the highest power is held by the people and is usually used through representatives. The opposite of democracy is OLIGARCHY.
About FOSSU:
FOSSU is an acronym for Federation of Oyo State Students' Union. It is the official body for all indigenes of Oyo State, studying a full-time accredited courses in any recognised tertiary institutions across the nation and in abroad. In Nigeria, the Union is estimated to

RE: INAUGURATION OF FACTIONAL FOSSU NATIONAL LEADERSHIP

In reference to the last broadcast from the FOSSU National Judicial Council on avoiding factionalism of FOSSU National Council, and in accordance with the provision of the Union's Constitution: Article 7, Section 1 (subsection 1) and Section 2 (subsection III, VII & XI) respectively, the FOSSU National Judicial Council hereby instructs the general public, particularly concerned FOSSU members and stakeholders to until further notice, shun/ignore any broadcast calling for or announcing inauguration of any FOSSU National Council leadership.

The Judicial Council deems, it is necessary and appropriate to cease any form of inauguration of the union leadership at this moment, in order to in totality deplore the act of factionalism in Oyo State students' unionism, and set a legacy for others across the nation.

As the FOSSU National Judicial Council always says, the Council is committed to ensuring no anomaly is tolerated in our dear Union. We hereby implore all FOSSU members and stakeholders, home and abroad to keep up their unwavering support and believe in the FOSSU National Judicial Council.

On Friday, 13th May, 2022, the leadership of FOSSU National Judicial Council received a copy (digital copy) of a document tagged “FOSSU National Election Report”. The report was a succinct one, stating how the event of FOSSU National Election held on Saturday, 7th May, 2022 went.

The council in affirming the objectives of the union as provided in the Union's CONSTITUTION; Article 2, section 1; subsection 1 & 2 hereby acknowledges the report, and commends the conduct of the FOSSU Electoral Commission, 2022.

However, an information also reached us that an election was held about a month ago, dated 26th March, 2022. Whereas the chairman of the Electoral commission claimed no election held on the said date, as he claims that the electoral process was aborted. Hence the need for the Judicial Arm of the Union to take a critical and unbiased view into the case.

The council hereby seizes this medium to inform the general public of her intention to call all the concerned personalities to a meeting, for a United FOSSU National, prior to taken any legal measures.

The Council hereby implores every individual that receives the invitation letter to honour the Judicial Council's UNITED MISSION.

It is imperative I make it clear, that the Judicial Council has no interest in either of the factions. Her priority is undivided FOSSU National.

The Commission appreciates the maximum cooperation from the students populace and which has brought us this far. As it is a well known fact that the transition process which started with the inauguration of the FOSSUEC has to be conducted irrespective of challenges as this will gear the progress of the Union and drove us forward in the protection of our interest as it suits the wishes of Fossuites.

JUSTICE ADEWALE OLAMIDE ADELEYE NEW YEAR MESSAGE

Dear compatriots, I great and felicitate with you all as we enter the year 2022, which promise to be a momentous one for us, I joined people over the world in thanking God Almighty for his Mercy that guided us safely through the calamities and challenges of year 2021.
Few months ago, precisely 07/11/2021 when Federation of Oyo State students Union, Senate Arm, held her dissolution sitting at Federal college of forestry Jericho Ibadan. I stood before the house to take my oat as Chief Justice without objection.
Initially, I seem declining, but dear lovers, entreated me not to do so, because commitment, leadership skills and experience has been put to diagnosis, which figured me out among others, Which is the only way to end forbidden irregularities in our dear union.

I am using this stance to appreciate those that bring about this, most importantly the Senate president in person of Sen. Ajadi Isaac among others, thanks for the trusting in me, may God help me not to be a disgrace to student populace.
I take hold of this medium to implore all students to help in improving obedient standard with your continuous support we shall make a very considerable progress.
Today I say to all student that, by working together in love,in strength and in faith, we will build a greater generation. We cannot go back to the old way where individual students' freedom were trampled upon, we have moved forward! Sincerely forward!!

Indeed, this is another golden opportunity for us to restart new and very strong in waging war against every oppressor. Division benefits and profit is of no positive significant. In lieu of this, I'll like our target to be on dimensional homogeneity.
Always believe with me that every individual are leader because you must definitely have someone following your footsteps. Please strive hard to be a good role model, whatever you do today will become future reference. I charge agents of division to retrieve their sword back to scabbard and transform to be an agent of peace.

Truth need to be said, every misconception in student unionism have it catalyst, and mostly it's found to be political/government aids and chieftain. I plead thee to desist from causing division among student. Things are no more like that of then if any caught causing problem among student, such will find him/her self to be blame because drastic legal action will be put to consideration. Student unionism is quite different from secular politics.
I mustn't fail to appreciate those that are good role model among politician, which has been taken their time to solve student problem both in kind and cash, may you never fall.

I promised to diligently perform the obligation committed to me, while serving and after, i will always ensure that rule of law and order, I do not intimidate, I expand the freedom space,I give voice to the voiceless and uphold the weak that is the virtue which I treasure and, I will hold.

Wish you all happy New year and it shall be fruitful.

Sequel to the release which states that the election of the Union will hold today 31st of December 2021, the commission writes to notify leaders, stakeholders and entire students populace that the election will not hold as proposed.

The above decision was made to meet the initial promise by the commission which is to make the election participatory and considering the security of those that will be coming to the election and the the festive period we are in, traveling down from different part of the state to the venue of the election will be difficult if not impossible and the constitution states explicitly that the zones that makes up the state should participate equally in deciding the leadership of FOSSU, so the postponement of the election is in the interest of Oyo State students and also a step towards fulfilling the righteousness.

We are using this medium to tender our unreserved apology for any inconvenience(s) this might have caused and we promised to draw feasible plans and fix a new day for the election to be communicated as soon as possible. While working on this, we implore students leaders to disassociate themselves from situations that may put the ongoing electoral processes in danger and create avenue to ensure the needs to keep the atmosphere safe for every members of the Union to thrive.
