NASU MEMBERS BEAT FRESH STUDENTS, STALL ORIENTATION
-MATRICULATION MAY BE SUSPENDED
Members of the Non Academic Staff Union of University (NASU), University of Ibadan chapter on Wednesday, 9th March, 2016 stalled the Orientation programme organised for the fresh students of the university.
The students had earlier on the day converged on Trenchard Hall, the proposed venue of the event before members of NASU came to disperse them.
The University management thereafter directed the new students to go to the university's International Conference Centre (ICC) to have the programme done.
However, hardly had the students settled for the programme that the NASU officers got to the rescheduled venue with 'big canes' in their hands.
According to one of the fresh students (name withheld), the NASU members were seen beating students and many of them sustained injuries while some were even rushed to the University Health Service popularly called Jaja Clinic.
"The canes were so big that everybody just had to run for their dear lives. But those foods they've prepared for our refreshment, we must have them because we paid for them," another student said another while speaking to the UCJ reporter.
It should be remembered that the labour union had last week Wednesday staged a protest rally at the NISER Park challenging the university management on the rumoured deduction from members' salary. "We'd be going on strike if nothing is done to avert it," a member had said.
Meanwhile, the matriculation programme for the new intakes of the university already scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, 10th March, may be put on hold as many of the fresh students have not got their matriculation gowns.
Besides, if the strike action continues till tomorrow, the likehood of having the matriculation will be further hampered considering the strategic positions the union's members hold and the violent approach of the protesters
