An Entourage from the French Embassy in Nigeria led by the Head of Cooperation and Cultural Department, Monsieur Juikael Regnaut, on the 1st of February, 2024, came on a tour of the Dominican Chapel, Demas Nwoko's Iconic work which has continued to attract international recognition and listed as one of the 1001 Architectural edifices in the world.

The Prior of the Community, Fr. Paul Orerhime Akpomie, OP, and Fr. Francis Chiadi, OP, as well as the Coordinator of the Demas Nwoko Chair of Philosophy of African Architectural Aesthetics, Sr. Mary Christine Ugobi, IHM gave a very insightful explanation of the unique features of the Chapel.

The HOD of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Dominican University, Fr. Chukwuemekalum Francis Nwosuh, finally led the delegation to meet with officials of the University.

To say that they were thrilled is an understatement.

In a grand celebration at Dominican University, Samonda, Ibadan, the esteemed architect Pa Demas Nwoko was honored with the unveiling of the 'Academic Chair of Philosophy of African Architectural Aesthetics.' This prestigious event, held on December 15, 2023, commemorated Nwoko's significant contributions to architecture, particularly his design of the historic Dominican Chapel, St. Thomas Aquinas Priory.

The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Dokun Oyeshola, OP, welcomed dignatries and all other attendees with a heartfelt address, praising Nwoko's architectural prowess and his influence on African aesthetics. The ceremony featured a Keynote Lecture by Dr. Stephen Ajayi, an address by the Head of Philosophy Department, Dominican University, Rev. Fr. Dr. Chukwuemekalum Francis Nwosuh, and a panel discussion with Sr. Dr. Mary Cristine Ugobi-O, IHM, Architect Mobolaji Adeniyi, and Dr. Victor Okhai, unraveling the synergy between creativity and development.

Highlighting the event was the presentation of awards to Nwoko by the university registrar, Rev. Fr. Samuel Onyiba, OP, and the Superior of the Dominican Community, Very Rev. Fr. Paul Akpomie, OP. Nwoko's speech reflected on his journey, marked by a pivotal train accident that steered him back to architecture, and his enduring dedication to his craft, affirming, "I am not finished yet."

DU celebrates 50years of the Chapel, unveils academic chair of African Architectural Philosophy.

In a momentous occasion, Dominican University, Samonda, Ibadan celebrated the renowned architect Demas Nwoko and unveiled Academic Chair of Philosophy of African Architectural Aesthetics dedicated to Demas Nwoko at Dominican University on 15th December 2023. The occasion celebrated Nwoko's remarkable contribution to the field of architecture, particularly his design of the historic Dominican Chapel, which has stood strong for the past 50 years and has now become a popular tourist and pilgrim destination.
The Vice-Chancellor of Dominican University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Dokun Oyeshola, OP, in his welcome address, warmly welcomed all attendees and emphasized that the occasion was a fitting tribute to Demas Nwoko's legacy of architectural aesthetics. He highlighted Nwoko's exceptional talent and contributions to the field of architecture, particularly in African architectural aesthetics.
Nwoko is renowned for his ability to create buildings that are both functional and visually captivating, with the Dominican Chapel being his first masterpiece as an architect. Additionally, Nwoko is a prolific painter and sculptor who has authored numerous books on art and architecture. His works have been exhibited internationally, and he has received numerous international recognitions and accolades, including the prestigious 2023 Golden Lion Award for lifetime achievement in Venice. Even in his 80s, Nwoko remains active in the world of art and architecture, serving as an inspiration to younger generations.
The event featured various activities, including a Keynote Lecture delivered via the internet by Dr. Stephen Ajayi on the topic of "Architecture, Spirituality, and the Ethos of African Architecture." providing valuable insights into the unique architectural expressions found in the continent. A documentary on Nwoko's life was also screened, providing a deeper understanding of his artistic journey. Furthermore, a Panel Discussion was moderated by Sr. Mary Cristine Ugobi-O,IHM , PhD. Thomist, Researher, Medieval /African Aesthetics, Dominican University, Ibadan, Architect Mobolaji Adeniyi. President, Nigerian Institute of Architects and Dr. Victor Okhai from University of Botswana explored the theme of "Cultivating Synergies: Uniting Creativity for Development." The discussion emphasized the importance of effective communication, clarity, shared goals, respect for each other's expertise, and flexibility.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was the unveiling of the Demas Nwoko Chair of Philosophy of African Architectural Aesthetics by the Vice-Chancellor. This prestigious chair aims to promote the study and exploration of African architectural aesthetics, ensuring its preservation and further development.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field, Demas Nwoko was presented with awards and an honorary certificate of recognition of the masterpiece; The Dominican Chapel, by the university registrar, Rev. Fr. Samuel Onyiba, OP and the Superior of the Dominican Community, Very Rev. Fr. Paul Akpomie, OP, respectively.
In his remarks, Pa Demas humbly admitted that he did not expect such a remarkable tribute. He believed that the service he rendered throughout his career was predestined by God. Reflecting on his life journey, he shared how he initially veered away from architecture and pursued a career in fine art. However, a life-altering train accident during one of his travels brought him back to his true calling.

Remarkably, Demas emerged from the accident unscathed, leading him to believe that God had a purpose for his life. This incident served as a turning point, reigniting his passion for architecture. Since then, he has dedicated himself to the profession, tirelessly reporting to his office six days a week and continuously securing new projects.
Demas expressed his gratitude for the wonderful relationship he shares with the Dominican community. He highlighted that their commission was the first architectural project he ever received, which played a pivotal role in redirecting him towards his original destined career. The opportunity to lead the Demas Nwoko Chair of Philosophy of African Architectural Aesthetics further solidifies his commitment to promoting and preserving the unique architectural heritage of Africa.
As he delivered his speech, Demas proudly boasted about his unwavering dedication to the profession. Despite his numerous accomplishments, he emphasized that he remains passionate and driven, constantly seeking new challenges. ‘I can assure you that I am not finished yet’ he said. His tireless work ethic and unmatched expertise have enabled him to continue attracting job opportunities like never before.
Nwoko expressed his gratitude to Dominican University for the thoughtful honor bestowed.
