The Department of Geography, University of Ibadan, has organised a befitting valedictory programme to celebrate the 70th birthday and retirement of Professor Adeniyi Sulaiman Gbadegesin

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, described the retiring professor as "not just a scholar, but an institution within an institution."

Professor Adebowale said Professor Gbadegesin's contributions have over the decades transcended the walls of lecture halls, laboratories, and libraries, shaping minds, influencing policies, and advancing knowledge in administration and his field of specialization, Geography and Environmental Management.

He further described Professor Gbadegesin as a teacher of teachers, pillar of the university community, and a man with a heart of gold.

The Vice-Chancellor thanked the retiring Don for his service, leadership, and indelible impact, saying that his name will forever remain in the annals of the University of Ibadan as one of its finest.

The Chairman of the valedictory programme, Dr. Akin Onigbinde, SAN, FCIArb, a former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, described Professor Gbadegesin as a dependable leader/ community leader and prayed that his retirement would mark the commencement of another exciting journey of productivity and value in the service of humanity.

Dr Onigbinde used the opportunity to interrogate how the university system stands today and advised that everything should be done to preserve, improve, and grow the university system in the best interest of the individuals who pass through them and the societies where they exist.

The Valedictory Lecture was delivered by a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Dr Usani Uguru Usani. It was entitled: Instrumentality of Geoinformatics as Patent Tools for Environmental Governance.

Dr. Usani submitted that
the essence of the attention that is placed on the environment is closely related to its underlying role in the global development agenda.

He noted that geographic phenomena of natural causes and social and economic relations of the systems of interrelationships have rendered geography as a discipline and its tools as enablers of the viable field for examining environmental issues and proffering solutions based on the knowledge content of the subject.

Dr Usani stated that
every commentary on the environment is an activity that is putting geography in practice.

He, therefore, warned that until policy processes recognise and engage geography, its space will continue to be driven by gambling with concepts and theories, creating a forum of uncertainty that may never identify their solution compass.

A special edition of the journal of the Nigerian Geographers Association was launched in honour of the celebrator by the National President of the NGA, Professor Sanni Mashi, while a Video Documentary was also unveiled in honour of the celebrator by Emeritus Professor Kayode Oyesiku, former Vice-Chancellor of TASUED.

A Professor of Educational Management at the University of Ibadan, Professor Adebola Olufunlayo Jaiyeoba has recommended that policy implementation has to be consistent and the idea of policy change by every new government should be restricted.

Professor Jaiyeoba made the recommendation in a valedictory address on her retirement from the university.

She noted that in view of the many challenges facing educational administration in Nigeria, there was a need for the repositioning of educational administration and the empowerment of educational administrators to improve policies' implementation.

She advised that for every new policy or policy reform, a period of preparation for the take-off must be put in place during which public enlightenment about the policy goals and implementation must have taken place.

Professor Jaiyeoba said funding of education must be given priority and aligned to UNESCO specification, while measures that can guarantee an uninterrupted academic calendar be put in place.

She charged her colleagues in the Department of Educational Management to keep the fire burning in teaching, research, and community service to enhance the success of educational administration in Nigeria.

The Dean, Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, Professor Simeon Adebayo Oladipo also delivered a guest lecture in honour of Professor Jaiyeoba.
