UI/UCH SENSITISE UI COMMUNITY ON MORE EFFECTIVE CANCER MANAGEMENT METHODS IN COMMEMORATING WORLD ASTHMA DAY

In commemoration of the 2026 World Asthma Day, the University Health Centre, University of Ibadan, in collaboration with the University College Hospital (UCH), has conducted a sensitization rally to promote the use of anti-inflammatory inhalers in the management of Asthma in commemoration of the World Asthma Day.

Speaking while paying a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, the leader of the World Asthma sensitization group, Dr O. M. Sogaolu, a Chest Asthma Specialist and Visiting Consultant Pulmonologist, in UCH stated that the sensitization is to commemorate the 2026 World Asthma Day, themed “Breathe Free, Live Fully”.

Dr. Sogaolu emphasized that World Asthma Day, observed annually on the first Tuesday of May since 1998, was established to create awareness that no one needs to die from asthma and that people living with the condition can lead normal, productive lives with proper management and no limitations.

He stated that the 2026 World Asthma Day Commemoration is focused on sensitizing members of the University community on more effective ways of managing asthma, moving beyond symptom relief to proper treatment of the root causes through the use of Anti-Inflammatory medications.

He stressed the importance of using anti-inflammatory medications (controller drug) which addresses the root cause of air obstruction in the lung, rather than relying solely on Ventolin, which only relieves symptoms temporarily. He advocated for the adoption of 2-in-1 Anti inflamatory inhalers that address both inflammation and symptoms for better control. He also called for continuous education on asthma triggers and proper management.

Dr. Sogaolu also highlighted ongoing efforts by the team to improve access to asthma medications, promote regular check-ups, and educate patients across the university community.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, commended the advocacy and sensitization efforts of the Asthma Group in ensuring relief and longevity for Asthma patients, particularly in the University of Ibadan. Describing the University Health Services (Jaja) as a critical facility serving students, staff, and surrounding communities, he applauded its resourcefulness in collaborating with UCH in addressing Asthma management issues within the University community. He assured the group of the University’s continued support for awareness creation, identification of asthma patients on campus, and improved access to affordable and effective treatment.

The visit is expected to strengthen ties between the University Health Services and UCH towards better asthma care, regular sensitization programs, and ensuring students and staff receive more effective management of the condition.

Sensitization activities followed immediately after the courtesy visit.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION DONATES 100 KVA SOLAR POWER ENERGY SYSTEM TO UI LABORATORY

The Department of Virology, University of Ibadan recently received a donation of a 100KVA Solar Power Energy System for the Virology laboratory. The Donation, which was made by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was commissioned on 30 April, 2026.

Speaking while receiving a team comprising representatives from the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), World Health Organization (WHO) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on a courtesy visit prior to the commissioning, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, mni, FAS, commended the WHO and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the provision of the Solar Power Energy System.

Prof Adebowale reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to global health research and partnerships, describing the Department of Virology as a “pride of Africa” with far-reaching impact in disease surveillance and response. He highlighted the global recognition of the laboratory, particularly its role in polio eradication and response to emerging viral outbreaks, while also stating that the laboratory’s outputs are widely trusted for their accuracy and precision.
He stressed that the contribution of the laboratory during major health crises, including recent viral outbreaks, have positioned the University prominently on the global scientific map, acknowledging the role of past leaders of the Department, including Professors Oyewale Tomori and Olufemi Olaleye in achieving this feat.

He noted that investing in alternative energy sources such as solar power is essential for maintaining high-level scientific work, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria where power supply remains inconsistent
would enhance sustainability and ensure uninterrupted research activities in the laboratory, despite power challenges.

According to him, with the laboratory’s accreditation and strengthened capacity, Nigeria can now generate results within a much shorter timeframe, enabling quicker and more effective outbreak response.

He noted that the intervention supported by WHO and partners has significantly improved the country’s ability to manage public health emergencies, particularly in areas such as polio surveillance and viral disease control. Dr. Idowu added that the Federal Government remains committed to supporting the laboratory, with the goal of expanding its capacity to handle more complex and large-scale health challenges.

Also speaking on behalf of WHO, Dr Chia Julius reaffirmed support of his organization for the University, noting that the collaboration reflects a shared commitment towards strengthening health systems across Africa. He emphasized that the project, supported with funding from the Gates Foundation, is part of broader efforts by WHO to build resilient laboratory infrastructure and train personnel capable of responding to global health threats.
