Students of the MSc. Petroleum Geoscience programme at the Pan African University recently embarked on a five-day geological field excursion to selected locations in Ogun State and Ondo State, within the eastern Dahomey Basin. The fieldwork was designed to bridge classroom knowledge with hands-on geological investigation, exposing students to carbonate platforms, clastic sedimentary systems, shale formations, and bitumen-bearing deposits. Through detailed lithological logging, structural measurements, and on-site interpretation, students examined limestone successions at Ibese, sandstone and shale outcrops, and surface expressions of unconventional hydrocarbons.

The excursion provided valuable insights into petroleum system elements, including source rocks, reservoirs, seals, and migration pathways. Observations of bitumen seepages and tar sands strengthened the understanding of hydrocarbon generation and leakage within sedimentary basins. Beyond technical skills, the experience enhanced teamwork, field safety awareness, and professional competence. Overall, the field investigation was a significant academic milestone, reinforcing practical training and preparing students for real-world challenges in petroleum exploration and basin analysis.

Students of the Medicinal Plant Research and Drug Development programme at the Pan African University of Life and Earth Sciences Institute, University of Ibadan, recently embarked on an exciting and educational field trip to RUCH Investment and Manufacturing Limited in Ogun State, Nigeria. The students were warmly received by the company’s leadership team, including Dr. Tejumola Bolujoko, Mrs. Funke Bolujoko, Mr. Lekan Adetula, and Mr. Aminu Oluwafemi, who shared their vision of promoting safe, innovative, and high-quality herbal products. Through engaging presentations, the scholars gained insight into how medicinal plants such as moringa, ginger, turmeric, hibiscus, and green tea are carefully processed and transformed from raw plant materials into finished herbal teas and spices ready for consumers.

Beyond the presentations, the students toured the production facilities where they observed key stages such as sorting, washing, controlled drying, milling, quality control, storage, and packaging. This hands-on experience effectively bridged the gap between classroom learning and real-world industrial practice, strengthening their understanding of phytochemistry, product development, and quality assurance in herbal manufacturing. The field trip proved to be an enriching academic experience, expanding their professional outlook and reinforcing the importance of scientific rigor and innovation in advancing natural medicine.
