JAMB POLICY MEETING 2026: FUTIA JOINS OTHER STAKEHOLDERS IN ABUJA

The Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi - FUTIA, Akwa Ibom State is among the Tertiary Institutions in the Country that attended the 2026 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Policy Meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions and the 6th Edition (2025 and 2026) of National Tertiary Admissions Performance Merit Award (NATAP-M Awards) held on Monday, 11th May 2026 at the Body of Benchers Auditorium, Abuja.

The strategic policy chaired by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa had in attendance other key stakeholders in Nigeria’s education sector, including representatives of the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), as well as Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, Provosts, Registrars and Admission Officers from various Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education and Monotechnics across the country.

Earlier in his speech, the Honourable Minister, Dr Tunji Alausa who declared the event open announced the Minimum Admissible Score(MAS) into Tertiary Institutions on behalf of the Federal Government.

After a unanimous vote by the Vice Chancellors, Rectors, Provosts of Nigerian Tertiary Institutions, the National Minimum Admissible Score for admission of students into various Institutions in the forthcoming 2026/2027 Academic Year has been fixed at 150 for Universities, 150 for Colleges of Nursing, and 100 for Polytechnics/Monotechnics while Colleges of Agriculture and Education will be admitting candidates through Direct Entry as adopted by stakeholders.

The Education Minister however reiterated that all Admissions must be done on JAMB Central Admission Processing System (CAPS); reinforcing Federal Government’s commitments to institutionalizing policies that will improve standards and quality of education in the country. He also restated that sixteen (16) years remains the minimum age of candidates for admission into tertiary institutions across the country.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa further clarified that the Minimum Tolerable UTME Score approved during the JAMB Policy Meeting is NOT the same as an institution’s actual cut-off mark.

He explained that the Minimum Tolerable Score(MTS) simply means institutions are not allowed to admit candidates below that benchmark.

ā€œTertiary institutions can still fix their own cut-off marks higher depending on competition, course requirements, and available admission slots.

For example, if the approved minimum benchmark is 150, it does not mean every institution must admit candidates with 150. Institutions can decide to use 180, 200, or even higher scores for certain coursesā€, the Education Minister stressed

The FUTIA Vice Chancellor who doubles as the 2026 Chief External Examiner of JAMB in Akwa Ibom State, Prof. Leo Daniel led the University delegation including the University Registrar, Offiongita Nkang(Mrs) and the University Admissions Officer, Edidiong Ukpong to the strategic meeting.

In a notable development, the familiar term ā€œCut-off Markā€ has officially been replaced with ā€œMinimum Tolerable Score (MTS)ā€ or ā€œMinimum Admissible Score (MAS)ā€

Also present at the event were the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Ahmed, Registrar and Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede; the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, the Director of Admissions, JAMB, Mr. Mohammed Babaji Ahmed; other senior officials of the Board; and the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Dr. Olugbemisola Titilayomi Odusote, the Akwa Ibom State JAMB Desk Officer, Mahmood Yahaya
