ACTING RECTOR CHARGES FRESHERS ON GOOD MORAL CONDUCT
…As Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic Holds 2026 Orientation Exercise

The Acting Rector of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Dr. Akanimo Jonah, has charged newly admitted students of the institution to uphold good moral conduct, discipline and academic integrity as they commence their academic journey.

Dr. Jonah gave the charge during the 2026 Orientation Exercise held at the Polytechnic’s Library Conference Hall.

In his keynote address, the Acting Rector congratulated the students on securing admission and described their entry into the Polytechnic as a defining moment in their lives.

“You have been given a rare opportunity to shape your future. In Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, we place high premium not only on academic excellence but also on character formation. Your conduct will determine how far your certificate will take you.”

He warned strongly against the practice of “sorting,” stressing that the institution would not condone any form of academic corruption.

“Do not attempt to buy grades or induce any lecturer. Sorting is a dishonest act that undermines merit and hard work. If you attend classes regularly, participate actively in class activities and prepare adequately for your examinations, success will naturally follow,” he stated firmly.

The Acting Rector also issued a stern warning against cultism and other social vices, describing them as destructive forces capable of ruining destinies.

“Cultism is not an option here. It breeds violence, fear and instability. Anyone found engaging in cult-related activities or other criminal acts will face severe disciplinary measures. Choose friends wisely and associate with individuals who will positively influence your academic and moral growth,” he cautioned.

Dr. Jonah further advised the students on the importance of prompt payment of school fees, noting that early payment would facilitate smooth registration and the issuance of official registration numbers.

“Your registration number is your academic identity. Without completing your registration through payment of fees, you cannot access certain institutional privileges, including examinations. I urge you to ensure that your fees are paid promptly to avoid unnecessary delays,” he added.

He reassured the students of Management’s unwavering commitment to providing a conducive learning environment, ensuring security on campus and promoting fairness and transparency in academic processes.

The Polytechnic Librarian, Dr. Mercy Ukpanah, delivered an insightful lecture on the effective use of the institution’s library facilities. She encouraged students to cultivate strong reading habits and take advantage of available print and digital resources to enhance their academic performance.

The Director of Admissions, Dr. Aniefon Ibuot, sensitized the freshers on admissions procedures, documentation requirements and the importance of ensuring that their admission records are properly regularized.

Speaking on examination matters, the Director of Examination, Results and Records, Dr. Eno John, educated the students on examination conduct, continuous assessment procedures, grading systems and penalties for examination malpractice. He urged them to strictly adhere to examination guidelines to avoid sanctions.

On career development, the Director of Career Services, Dr. Glory Umoh, advised the students to begin early career planning, identify their strengths and align their academic pursuits with future professional goals.

The Deputy Registrar, Students Affairs, Pastor Nathaniel Ibanga, enlightened the students on the different units under the Registry including proper documentation and general administrative protocols.

The Head of ICT Centre, Mr. Nelson Godwin, provided guidance on Students’ Identity Card registration and issues relating to JAMB documentation and regularization processes, urging students to ensure accuracy in their personal data.

Security matters were addressed by the Chief Security Officer, Mr. Uwem Umoren, alongside the SPI Desk Officer, Mr. Ugo Michael, who jointly advised the freshers to steer clear of cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime and other criminal activities. They emphasized the need for vigilance and encouraged students to promptly report suspicious activities to appropriate authorities.

The Desk Officer, Psychometric Studies, Mr. Nse Bassey represented by Comr. Edidiong Williams spoke on the registration procedures and the implications for not participating in the process.

The event also had in attendance the Acting Registrar, Mr. Godswill Udofah, SUG President, Comr. Wisdom Udoimuk, Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Winner Archibong and other students.

A Commemorative Service was held in honour of Late Mrs. Ime Etuk at the ASUP Secretariat, bringing colleagues, students, friends and family members into a quiet moment of reflection and shared grief. It was not just a formal gathering, but a deeply emotional occasion where memories were revisited, tears were shed and heartfelt words were spoken in honour of a woman whose life left a meaningful imprint on many hearts.

The Deceased until her sad demise recently was a Chief Lecturer and Head of Department of General Studies, School of Communication Arts.

“Mrs. Ime Etuk was the kind of person you could always count on. She carried out her duties with grace, never seeking applause, but always delivering excellence.” he said softly

The Acting Rector noted that beyond her academic brilliance, what truly stood out was her kindness, the way she greeted everyone warmly, listened attentively and treated both staff and students with dignity. He added that the Polytechnic community will deeply miss his wisdom, calmness and gentle spirit while praying that her would find eternal rest.

The service also featured word exhortation by Pastor Akanimo and prayers for the bereaved family, asking God to comfort them in ways words cannot.

A member of the deceased’s family, in a brief but emotional remark, expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming support, describing the show of love as a source of strength in their darkest moment.
