Ritman University IRPM Students Embark on Industrial Visit to Enhance Practical Knowledge in Employment Relations and Human Resource Management
Students of the 300 Level, Department of Industrial Relations and Personnel Management (IRPM), one of the academic programmes under the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences at Ritman University, have embarked on an educational industrial visit aimed at broadening their practical understanding of employment relations and human resource management.
The industrial visit, organized as part of the academic requirements for the course Industrial Visit on Employment Relations and Human Resource Management (Course Code: IRP 327), is designed to expose students to real-life administrative structures, workplace relations, and human resource practices within both academic and public service institutions.
The exercise commenced within the University environment, where the students paid courtesy visits to the offices of all Principal Officers of the University. During the visits, the students had the opportunity to interact with key administrators and gain firsthand insight into institutional management, leadership structures, staff relations, and administrative coordination within the University system.
Speaking during the engagement sessions, the Principal Officers commended the Department for introducing practical learning experiences capable of bridging the gap between classroom theories and workplace realities. They also encouraged the students to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to professional excellence as future human resource and industrial relations practitioners.
Continuing the educational tour beyond the University environment, the students today visited the Office of the Head of Civil Service, Akwa Ibom State, where they were exposed to the operations of the State Civil Service structure and public sector human resource administration.
The visit provided the students with valuable knowledge on employment policies, industrial harmony, organizational communication, workforce management, employee welfare, and the strategic role of human resource management in public institutions. The interaction also enabled the students to appreciate the importance of professionalism, ethical conduct, and effective labour relations in the civil service.
The course lecturer, Mr. Uforo Eyo, who is also the acting Head of Department, Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, explained that the industrial visit forms an integral part of the Department’s commitment to experiential learning and professional development.
According to him, the initiative was carefully designed to give students practical exposure that complements classroom learning while preparing them for future careers in industrial relations, personnel management, and human resource administration.
He further noted that the Department remains committed to producing graduates equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical competencies required to thrive in today’s dynamic workplace environment.
The students expressed appreciation to the University Management, the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, and the various offices visited for granting them the opportunity to learn directly from experienced administrators and professionals.
The industrial visit is expected to continue with more engagements aimed at strengthening the students’ understanding of employment relations and modern human resource management practices.
