AFIT ADVOCATES FOR SELF RELIANCE IN DEFENCE PRODUCTION

The Commandant, Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna, Air Vice Marshal Adeniran Kolade Ademuwagun, on Monday 11 May, 2026, has emphasized the critical need for indigenous industrial reliance in defence production, alongside sustainable investment in capacity building within the sector. He highlighted that strengthening local capabilities in research, innovation, and manufacturing is essential for enhancing national security, reducing dependence on foreign technologies, and fostering sustainable development in Africa’s defence architecture.

AVM AK Ademuwagun, made this assertion while receiving participants of the Senior Course 47 from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), who paid a strategic study tour visit to the institute. During the visit, he underscored the strategic role of institutions like AFIT in developing skilled manpower, advancing technological expertise, and promoting collaborative efforts among African nations in addressing shared security challenges. He further noted that regional cooperation, knowledge exchange, and joint training initiatives remain vital in building a resilient and self-sufficient defence ecosystem across the continent.

The Commandant further emphasized the significant contributions of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), alongside other indigenous companies in Nigeria, to the operational effectiveness and capacity development of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). He noted that these institutions have played a pivotal role in manpower development through specialized training, technical education, and the advancement of local expertise in aviation engineering, maintenance, and defence technologies. He stressed that sustaining these efforts is crucial in ensuring long-term self-reliance, operational efficiency, and strategic independence in Nigeria’s defence sector.
AVM Ademuwagun, charged the Ghanaian Air Force to adopt a similar approach by investing in local capacity development and strengthening indigenous defence capabilities. He highlighted the challenges often associated with arms procurement from foreign countries, including high costs, bureaucratic delays, political restrictions, and dependence on external suppliers for maintenance and upgrades. According to him, these constraints underscore the importance of building internal capacity to support national defence needs.

Also speaking during the visit, the Deputy Commandant, Air Vice Marshal O.C. Ubadike, described AFIT as a research-driven institution that serves as a key enabler in Nigeria’s defence production ecosystem. He noted that the institute is at the forefront of training highly skilled personnel both locally and internationally, while also supporting the Nigerian Air Force’s modernization efforts, particularly in advanced surveillance and intelligence operations. He reiterated AFIT’s commitment to innovation, research, and the development of cutting-edge technologies necessary for contemporary military operations.
Meanwhile, Major General Jackson Wonje, the Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), who was ably represented by Colonel Fiifi Deegbe, the Director for Research and Development and leader of the delegation expressed profound appreciation for the warm reception and exemplary hospitality extended by AFIT. Colonel Deegbe, commended the institute's leadership and staff for the insightful briefing and tour, which provided valuable exposure to Nigeria's advancements in defence education and indigenous production.

He assured the gathering of Ghana's unwavering commitment to deepening collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force in key areas such as capacity building, joint research initiatives, and the pursuit of sustainable indigenous defence manufacturing.
Colonel Deegbe, stated that such partnerships align with Ghana's strategic goals of enhancing operational self-reliance and regional security cooperation, paving the way for mutual knowledge exchange and technology transfer between the two nations' air forces.
