Northwest University Kano Community Bids an Emotional Farewell to Vice Chancellor, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa

On Tuesday, 7th October 2025, Northwest University Kano, stood still in honor of one of its most remarkable leaders — Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa — as the entire University community gathered to bid farewell to the outgoing Vice Chancellor whose successful tenure is nearing its completion.

The Professor Hafiz Abubakar Auditorium, City Campus, was filled to capacity as members of staff, students, family, and friends came together to celebrate the legacy of a man whose leadership, humility, and commitment to excellence have transformed the institution into a center of academic distinction.

The event commenced with a warm welcome address by the Dean, Students Affairs, Dr. Ibrahim Musa, who described Professor Kurawa as a transformational leader whose administration recorded unprecedented achievements across academic, infrastructural, and administrative spheres. He offered prayers for Allah’s continued guidance and blessings upon the outgoing Vice Chancellor, whom he described as “a rare leader whose vision and compassion brought unity and progress to the University community.”

In a touching display of appreciation, the Principal Officers of the University took turns to share their reflections on the tenure of Professor Kurawa. The Registrar, Dr. Adm. Isyaku Adamu, spoke with emotion about the exemplary leadership style of the outgoing Vice Chancellor, noting that his administration strengthened administrative efficiency and fostered harmony across all sections of the University.

> “Professor Kurawa is not just a leader; he is a mentor and a builder of people,” Dr. Adamu remarked. “He led with wisdom, humility, and fairness, ensuring that every staff member felt valued and included. His legacy will continue to inspire those of us privileged to work under his guidance.”

Similarly, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Aisha Garba Habib, praised the outgoing Vice Chancellor for his academic foresight and dedication to quality education. She emphasized that his tenure witnessed remarkable growth in academic programs, postgraduate studies, and research collaborations.

> “Under Professor Kurawa’s leadership, this University experienced academic excellence and innovation like never before,” Professor Aisha noted. “He believed in the power of education and worked tirelessly to make Northwest University a model of integrity and academic quality. His vision and resilience have left an indelible mark on our institution.”

Several members of staff also seized the moment to pay personal tributes, recounting experiences that reflected Kurawa’s kindness, open-door policy, and fatherly concern for all. The atmosphere was deeply emotional as the University community reflected on parting with a leader whose impact extended far beyond administrative success — touching lives and shaping futures.

One of the most memorable moments of the day was the presentation of Awards of Excellence and Good Governance to the Vice Chancellor. The Principal Officers jointly presented the first award, after which all Faculties, Directorates, and Units of the University took turns to honor him with their own awards and gifts.

Beyond the University, numerous agencies, organizations, and professional bodies sent goodwill messages, awards, and tokens of appreciation, recognizing Kurawa’s exceptional contributions to education and leadership. Students’ Unions, past and present, also presented their tributes and plaques of honor, celebrating his firm support for students’ welfare and development. Friends, relatives, and community members joined the procession of goodwill presentations, turning the day into a celebration of love and legacy.

When it was time for the celebrant to speak, the hall was filled with emotion. Professor Kurawa, visibly moved by the overwhelming show of affection, expressed deep gratitude to the University community for organizing such a memorable event in his honor.

> “I am truly humbled by this love and recognition,” he said. “Serving this great institution has been a source of pride and fulfillment. I am grateful to every member of this community for their cooperation, loyalty, and friendship. Though my tenure is ending, my heart remains with Northwest University Kano. I will continue to support this University in every possible way.”

The event concluded with prayers for Professor Kurawa’s continued success and good health, followed by group photographs with family members, friends, and University staff who turned out in large numbers to celebrate him.

It was indeed an emotional and unforgettable day — a fitting tribute to a man whose leadership redefined excellence and whose name will forever be etched in the proud history of Northwest University Kano.

EVEN IN HIS FINAL DAYS, VC KURAWA MAINTAINS DIRECT INVOLVEMENT IN EXAMINATUONS

In what appears to be his final examination tour as Vice Chancellor of Northwest University Kano, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, on Wednesday, 17th September 2025, once again demonstrated his long-standing commitment to academic excellence and integrity by personally monitoring the ongoing examinations across the University’s main campus.

The Vice Chancellor, accompanied by a team of senior officials, visited several examination halls across different faculties to observe the conduct of the exercise. True to his practice since assuming office, Professor Kurawa did not limit himself to mere inspection but actively engaged in the process. In some halls, he personally participated in the distribution of examination materials, highlighting his hands-on approach to leadership and supervision.

This routine has become a hallmark of Professor Kurawa’s tenure. His presence before, during, and after examinations has consistently served as a morale booster to staff and students, while also ensuring strict adherence to rules guiding the conduct of examinations at the institution.

Speaking after the tour, the Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of fairness, transparency, and discipline in maintaining the credibility of the university’s academic system. He noted that his regular visits were aimed at obtaining first-hand information on the realities of examination management rather than relying solely on reports.

Professor Kurawa’s gesture was widely regarded by staff and students as a reflection of his dedication to upholding standards and nurturing a culture of accountability in the university.

As his tenure draws to a close in October 2025, the examination tour is seen as a symbolic reminder of the Vice Chancellor’s legacy of commitment, accessibility, and deep concern for the smooth running of academic activities at Northwest University Kano.
