If you are a native of Owan and you are above 40 years, and have never heard about the man, called "Aitalegbe." Well, we may not crucify you, but will be tempted to put a question mark on your knowledge about Owan history?

If you describe him as a "warlord", "giant", or a "talisman", you will certainly not be wrong. Such was his nature. He was "all-in-one." He was a celebrated warlord, whose heroism was acknowledged across the length and breadth of the present Edo North, and even up to Bida, in Niger State.

Even if you didn't hear about his military and magical exploits, you might have heard about a certain "man", who orchestrated the scheme that brought the draconian reign of Okun Imona to an abrupt end in Iuleha.
For those of you who might not have also heard about Okun Imona. He (Okun) was the district ruler of Iuleha between 1907-1913. It was during his reign that Iuleha witnessed the highest wave of killings and violence in her history.

His style of leadership was oppressive to the people . He plotted several heinous schemes which sent many of the inhabitants to their early graves. Community oppression was central to his rulership, and Ivbiodohen community had a " sweet smell" of his oppression. He was the man to think of; and nobody was courageous enough to dare him without incurring his wrath.

But guess what? Aitalegbe rose to the occasion to liberate Iuleha people by plotting a scheme that sent him and his cohorts to prison. Let me pause you there. This is only forms a part of the book's focus. Aitalegbe's military intervention in Emai; his showdown with Ozalla and Ipele (Ikpele) communities among others are captured in the book.

I guess you want to know who Aitalegbe really was? Where he hailed from? How he grew up and what shaped his life experience, which made him become who he was? You may also be curious to know how and where he acquired his military skills and magical power? If I may give you a hindsight: did you know that Aitalegbe travelled as far as Bida, in Niger State to acquire his military skills. I know may also be curious to know how he died? These, and many more are captured in the book!

IVBIOWAN KNOW YOUR HISTORY AND CULTURE

In the popular maxim, "A man who does not know where the rain started beating him cannot say where he dried his body." This adage speaks volume, and I can be adapted to describe somebody who has no knowledge of his background (history). It is clear that such individual is headed for a doom.

Bringing this timely reminder to you at point in time is a thankless sacrifice. Do the needful.

THE BOOK AT A GLANCE!

REMINDER

1. Did you know that the name, "Avbiosi", was coined from the expression, "Evbo lo kposi", which means " the community at the extreme." I'm sure you are curious to find out how this name came about?

2. Since the name of the community is expressly coined from a suggestive expression, it means that the name couldn't have been that of the founder. So, what then, was the name of the founder? By the way, who even founded Avbiosi? It will shock you to know the person founded it and how he managed to establish the settlement.
I know you will also be eager to know how he lived with his parents (Aoma and his 2nd wife), and later, his siblings (Uzebba, Evbioje, Okhia and Ogbagu). I guess you are eager to know how he broke free from his other siblings to establish his own settlement?

3. You would also find in the book the scuffle that ensued between Uzebba and Avbiosi, which gave rise to the establishment of "Akhiha stool" of Avbiosi today. Won't you be salivating to know the cause of the quarrel, where it happened and how Uzebba reacted? The book has answers to all of them.

4. Uniqueness of Avbiosi people that earned them several decorative and honourable names were also exploited in the book. I'm sure you might have heard the term, "Ehen-Osukpenuan" "Ivbihoro-loibo" and "Ehen-Okpitan." The people did not arrogate these honourable names for themselves, they earned them through their exploits in different facets of life.

If I were to dive into the coinage of "Ivbihoro-loibo"; did you know that, in the ancient times, Avbiosi art works, were renowned and competed favourably with that of the Binis. By the way, did you know that the first Professor of Art in Nigeria is from Avbiosi?

PROMOTION OF OWAN LANGUAGE

The Need to Sponsor Owan Language Books in Schools.

For a long time now, the good people of Owan have been clamouring for a teaching book on Owan language in schools. Over the years, several attempts have been made to respond to this clarion call but to no avail. The major impediment has been the *"dialectical variation"* among the communities in Owan. These dialectical differences did not only pose a challenge to the early writers but also discouraged them from further attempts. This explains why we had little or no literature on the teaching of Owan language in those years.

It is worrisome that today, the teaching of Owan language has completely faded out of our school system. More worrisome is the fact that other ethnic languages have now taken its place in our schools. In my recent tour, I discovered that some of our schools are now teaching our children *Hausa and Benin languages.* This is deeply sad and regrettably! Hence, urgent steps must be taken to reverse this trend and save our future from doom!

These were the concerns that drove the author of these books into deep research with a view to come up with a "tolerable material." After three years of intensive and rigorous research, the author came up with 6 "grounded" books that can be used to teach Owan language in schools.

The next challenge is how we can "flood" our schools with these books for their use. This is where your intervention is needed. You can support this patriotic effort by way of sponsorship to schools. The sponsorship has been categorized into different levels based on sponsors' capacities. These are the categories :

1. Sponsorship for a whole school

2. Sponsorship for a particular class

3. Sponsorship for prefects in a school

4. Sponsorship for best performing pupils/ students from each class.

5. Sponsorship for competitions.

Note: the books have been subsidized for sponsors. For enquiries, call:07061199662
