: Keep It Simple, Stupid (Day 4)
Today I learnt how to KISS in User Experience design. Don’t get it twisted, this is not the kind of kiss you are familiar with. KISS in UX is an abbreviation of the principle, K eep It
Simple, S tupid.
The principle as I understand it to be can be re-phrased(in my own words) to mean, make a product/website/app so simple so much that a very stupid person will know how to use it to a reasonable extent.
Many a time have we come across applications that are complex for no reason. Why do product engineers make the world so hard by making products that only genii like themselves understand?
Please don’t get me wrong, there are situations where you have no other option in design than to succumb to
complexity, but this should only happen when further simplification will only remove the necessary features a product must have.
Simplicity should also not be misinterpreted as low-quality , there is a difference. A simple design has all required features, only it is presented in an understandable manner. Much like your lecturer explaining a topic to you in an understandable manner, that’s simplicity. If he omits any necessary sub-topic or heading only to make you understand better then his lecture will become low quality(you code).
KISS principle isn’t applicable to UX design only, it also applies to our respective lives. Is your life simple or complex? I don’t expect an answer but I expect to meet again tomorrow to share and learn together.
Yours simply, Yusuf.

: Principles of UX design (Day 2)
If good UX is very important as I described yesterday, then how do you go about it? What are the rules that you must follow? What I basically discovered today are the most important principles of UX design. I’m going to keep it short and sharp (rules seem to bore people from my experience).
First among the principles of UX design is that aesthetics should never trump
usability. Before you consider designing a beautiful product, design a usable one first then beautify it. Usability before Aesthetics.
Another rule of the thumb is to always provide enough information for easier and less frustrating use of the product. An extreme example is a facebook where you have to search for a input form to update your status (I pray facebook never does that).
If you’ve ever used an app or visited a website where you find it difficult to return to the homepage or previous page you will understand UX design principle that states that the user should have full control of the product at all times.
I’m going to round-off with the principle (remember I promised to keep it short). Always let the user know what the product can do by providing appropriate signifier of a product feature. I hope its still short . To be continued tomorrow…

If good UX is very important as I described yesterday, then how do you go about it? What are the rules that you must follow? What I…

: Experience of a UX Designer (Day 1)
What is User Experience (UX) Design? Whats all the fuss about UX design? What are its application in the real world? These are some of the questions I kept asking myself about UX design. Fortunately for me I got my answers after reading the review and chapter 1 of the book The Design of Everyday things by Don Norman. God! the man is good (him try well well).
Being the kind of person I am. I just had to philosophize about UX design to really understand and digest it. So this is what I got…
What is UX design?
Everything that we see was designed by someone intentionally or unintentionally. For me, UX design is all about making technology easier and more interesting to use. And by technology I don’t mean Phones, Computers and Softwares only. Cars, brooms(yes brooms), TVs, Screw drivers, Pens and other tools used by Humans are included. How do you apply UX design to a broom? — by making it longer so that a user (the sweeper) need not bend (by the way have you used a short broom before? its sucks). Good UX design is about making you feel good while using your phone, its when MTN picks up immediately you call customer care, its when its obvious you should pull/push/slide a door while
Bad UX design is simply when you get frustrated while using a device or tool.
Whats all the fuss about UX design?
Who should we blame if you don’t know how to use an app you recently installed? Who should we blame if the ink in your Pen overflows into the pocket of your favorite jeans trouser? Should we blame you or the designer of the app and the Pen? I say we blame the designer. User Experience design is important because it makes it difficult to make an error or mistake while using a product. It justifies the ignorance/stupidity of the user. If the user didn’t see a product feature then why didn’t the designer show him by making it obvious. I find this fascinating because it also applies to our everyday lives especially Students (science and engineering Students to be precise), why would I understand a subject if all the lecturer does is explain it the way he understands it and not the way I see the world. I think UX design is really important especially for Scientist and Engineers because it will make them realize that the success of their discoveries/inventions is dependent on how well people can relate with and understand it. Imagine a Car only Henry Ford could drive, or a Plane only the Wright Brothers could fly. These technologies had to take into consideration the people that will eventually use them and that is why we also have to take into consideration the people that will use our websites, apps and products in general otherwise we risk people abandoning them for an easier and less frustrating product.
What are the applications of UX design in the real world?
Seriously! How dear I ask myself that question . UX design as I found out is actually about application of things to the real world. People don’t care how a technology works. Bring together all the mathematical equations, process analysis, logic etc in the world all people really care about is how a technology serves them. The question is
what and not how. And I believe UX design is all about making it easier for people to discover and use the what of the product. I don’t want to know how
a phone sends signals all I care about is
what it can do and it can benefit me. Can it make calls? browse the internet? etc if Yes, then what are the buttons I have to click to use them and how
enjoyable is the experience.
These are some of my experiences while venturing into the world of User Experience design. See you tomorrow.

*WHATS UP GUYS*
Few weeks ago I started testing the Oceans of *USER INTERFACE AND USER EXPERIENCE UI/UX DESIGN*
I've learnt a few interesting stuffs which I think can be shared in the group so that We all (including myself) can learn.
I've decided to start a *7 days* long Programme where I will share knowledge/experience that I gained during the week. It will be more of UX(User Experience) than UI(User Interface) (The field is large).

“Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living the result of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinion drowned your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
