DEMONSTRATION OF APOSTOLIC AUTHORITY

KEY VERSE: “And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand” (Acts 13:11).

TEXT: ACTS 13:1-12

Joshua Travers wrote, “Ignorance has a terribly high price tag – but understanding and overcoming it can really pay off”, adding that “the greatest ignorance is when God’s law and the possibilities therein are ignored”. Souls are lost if believers fail to recognise this truth. But Jesus has given every believer the
authority that defeats ignorance. Commissioned by the Holy Ghost to the gospel work, Paul and Barnabas went to Cyprus. In the course of their journey, they encountered Bar-jesus, who though a Jew, made frantic efforts to hinder the deputy, Sergius from receiving the offer of salvation. Paul, filled with the Holy Ghost and apostolic authority, would take none of that. Immediately, he used this authority to silence Elymas. The deputy he tried to deceive graciously received sight to see the truth of Christ’s saving gospel.

Christ wins, even in difficult terrains.
Believers have authority over all satanic forces and human opposition to their God-ordained purpose. The clear revelation of the Scriptures is that Christ “…spoiled principalities and powers, (and) he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it” (Colossians 2:15).

Salvation in Christ, sanctification and empowerment by the Holy Ghost imbue in the believer the kind of apostolic authority that Paul and other apostles manifested during their outreaches. Believers cannot afford to cringe in the face of assaults against the gospel and its preachers. For sinners to be converted, we
must confront and silence the “Elymases” that seek to sway their attention and deceive them. We must do this with the demonstration of the Spirit and power of God.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: In God’s design, the gospel does not go without power.

Understanding the Tricks of the Devil: Resisting Provocation for Spiritual Victory

In the sacred scriptures, the Bible warns believers about the cunning tactics of the devil, who comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). One of the ways he accomplishes this is by using his agents to castigate true disciples of Jesus Christ, aiming to provoke them. James 1:19 advises believers to be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath, emphasizing the importance of maintaining composure in the face of provocation.

The Danger of Anger:
When a believer succumbs to anger, the devil gains access to their life, creating an opportunity for torment. The spirit of God cannot dwell in a heart tainted by sin, making it crucial for believers to guard against falling into the trap of anger.

A Revealing Deliverance:
An illustrative example from a past deliverance session involves a lady who confessed to participating in demonic activities against a prominent man of God. The devil attempted various schemes to make him fall into sin, but his steadfastness prevailed until an unexpected incident occurred. An evil spirit entered a dog, causing a disruption as the man of God awaited the end of his fasting. In a fit of anger, he reacted, allowing the evil spirit to afflict him with a prolonged sickness. The subsequent confession during deliverance brought clarity to the source of his affliction.

Biblical Lessons:
The Bible provides moral lessons through stories like that of Achan in Joshua 7:1, cautioning against trespassing in accursed things. Believers are urged not to allow attacks from devilish agents to provoke them. A profound example is found in the story of Paul and Silas, who, while imprisoned, sang praises and prayed despite intimidation and mockery, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity.
John 6:10 to 18,
We wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities, powers and rulers of darkness of this world.

And I cor 10: 4 says The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of all strong holds of the devil.

As believers, understanding the tricks of the devil is essential for spiritual warfare. The admonition to resist provocation, as outlined in James 1:19, serves as a powerful reminder. By remaining steadfast, prayerful, and resolute in the face of challenges, believers can follow the examples set by their forefathers in the faith. May God grant strength and wisdom to continue the good works entrusted to them, ensuring victory over the snares of the adversary.

Let us arise and face the challenge in faith and we shall conquer.
