*UNIOSUN Alumna Emerges Only Nigerian among 100 Scientists Honoured by UNESCO*

Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has recorded another landmark achievement in its quest to produce globally competitive graduates, following the international recognition of one of its alumni, Dr. Temitope Adeniyi, who recently emerged as the only Nigerian among 100 scientists honoured by UNESCO.

Dr. Adeniyi’s achievement was highlighted in an interview published by The Punch newspaper on 9 January, under the headline “Why I Emerged Only Nigerian Among 100 Scientists Honoured by UNESCO – US-Based Scientist.” The recognition has continued to attract national and international attention, further underscoring the quality of academic training and intellectual foundation provided by Osun State University.

A statement issued by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ademola Adesoji, confirmed that the celebrated scientist, formerly known as Temitope Bolaji ODEYOMI before marriage is an alumna of Osun State University and a proud member of its Alumni Association. She graduated from the University in 2015 with a Second Class Upper Division, a feat that reflected her academic excellence and discipline early in her career.

Dr. Adeniyi was trained in the Department of Physics with Electronics, where her undergraduate project was supervised by Professor Olusegun Alabi, a distinguished scholar in the Department. Her strong academic grounding at UNIOSUN laid the foundation for her subsequent professional and research journey, which has now culminated in global recognition by UNESCO for her contributions to science.

Commenting on the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, described the honour as a strong affirmation of the University’s commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also capable of competing and excelling on the global stage.

“This achievement is a testament to the quality of teaching, mentorship, and research culture at Osun State University,” the statement noted. “Dr. Adeniyi’s success reflects the University’s vision of nurturing globally relevant graduates who contribute meaningfully to knowledge advancement, innovation, and societal development.”

The University further noted that Dr. Adeniyi’s journey from an undergraduate student at UNIOSUN to a United States–based scientist honoured by UNESCO, serves as a source of inspiration to current students and a clear validation of the institution’s academic philosophy.

Osun State University congratulates Dr. Temitope Adeniyi on this well-deserved honour and celebrates her as a worthy ambassador of the University. The institution reiterates its resolve to continue providing a conducive academic environment that produces graduates equipped to excel both locally and internationally.

UNIOSUN TAKES OVER ALAKIJA MEDICAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING HOSPITAL

Osun State University has officially taken ownership of the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital, donated by the Alakija family to support medical education and healthcare development in Nigeria.

The official handover ceremony was held on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at Famfa Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos. The event was attended by the University’s Chancellor, Apostle (Mrs) Folorunso Alakija; the Pro-Chancellor, Professor Wale Oladipo; and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Managing Director of Famfa Oil and representative of the donor family, Mr Dele Alakija, said the family was delighted to hand over the facility to the institution.
“It is with great joy and gratitude that our family officially hands over this state-of-the-art medical research and training hospital to Osun State University,” he said.

He explained that his parents, Modupe and Folorunso Alakija, had a long-standing vision to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system through education, innovation and service. He praised the University for aligning with that vision and promised the family’s continued support for health-related initiatives.

“The facility is equipped with world-class medical equipment, and we look forward to the positive impact it will have on the University community and society at large,” he added.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, described the donation as a lasting legacy that would continue to grow for generations.
“This is not just a gift; it is a living institution that will outlive all of us,” he said.

Adebooye thanked the Chancellor, Apostle (Dr) (Mrs) Folorunso Alakija, for her benevolence and faith in the University’s vision. He also acknowledged Otunba T**i Laoye-Ponnle for facilitating the partnership, and the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Professor Labo Popoola, for initiating the engagement with the Alakija family.

He further appreciated the Ataoja of Osogbo for donating the land on which the hospital was built, and Architect Bose Ajayi for her dedication and professional excellence in supervising the project.
“Today is one of the happiest moments of my career,” the Vice-Chancellor said. “I was part of the team that first visited the forest where this project began, never imagining I would one day return as Vice-Chancellor to receive this magnificent hospital on behalf of the University.”

Also speaking, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Professor Wale Oladipo, thanked the Alakija family on behalf of the Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, and the people of the state for their uncommon generosity.
“As a scientist, I can attest that many of the facilities installed in this hospital are rare even in some of the most sophisticated hospitals across the country,” Oladipo said. “On behalf of the Governor and the people of Osun State, I assure you that this facility will be managed with professionalism and efficiency. It will not be run as a typical Government enterprise but maintained with private-sector discipline.”

The handover documents were signed by Mr Dele Alakija and Mr Ladi Alakija on behalf of the donor family, while Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye and Mrs Atinuke Abosede Oguntunde, the Registrar, signed for Osun State University.

Located in Osogbo, the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital boasts modern facilities designed to enhance medical research, clinical training and healthcare delivery.
The development marks another milestone in UNIOSUN’s quest to become a globally competitive institution in research, innovation and academic excellence.
