The second in the series of inaugural lecture of Western Delta University, Oghara, Delta State took place on 6th November, 2025.
In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Augustine Ikelegbe maintained that an inaugural lecture is a celebration of scholarly achievements of a Lecturer within the University Community.
The citation of the inaugural Lecturer, Nathaniel Umukoro, who is a Professor of International Affairs, Conflict, Peace and Strategic Studies from the Department of Political Science was read. He served as a Fellow, Social Science Research Council, USA (2013-2015). Humboldt Fellow, Bayreuth, Germany (2022), Senior Fellow, PARI, Germany (2023), Senior Fellow, University of Bonn, Germany (2024), Senior Fellow, Institute of Regional Geography, Leibzig, Germany (2025). He has published over 100 articles in high impact journals.
The inaugural lecture was appropriately titled "Unraveling the dynamics of conflict and peace conundrum in the international system from the lens of thermodynamics". The Lecturer, Prof. Umukoro defined peace, conflict and classified both concepts into various types. He established the relationship between peace and security and highlighted essential features of human security.
He described in simple, yet clear terms basic concepts in the study of thermodynamics and applied it's principles to conflict and peace situations in international systems, using Syria, Ukraine and Nigeria as case studies. He concluded by extracting practical lessons learnt.
The event was attended by the Institution's staff, students, friends, family members and well wishers of the inaugural Lecturer.
