AS THE SCHOOLS PREPARE TO RESUME!

The truth is that children below six years of age cannot be properly managed or successfully forced to wear either the nose-mouth mask or the face shield. This is because the children within these age brackets cannot resist the temptation of fiddling with it and or pulling it off either because it is strange on their body or because it inconveniences them. Attempting to assist them comply will create greater problem because it will result in a lot of distraction, noise, friction and fracas both in the classroom and outside. In such atmosphere, teaching and learning will not successfully take place. If you doubt my thinking, experiment it with your child or any child whose age is below six years at home.

Even the more mature primary and secondary school students will make a lot of fun out of the masks and shields, wearing them only when convenient or when strict compliance staff are around. Some of them will come with their parents' mentality most of whom believe that coronavirus is a figment of the government's imagination with the intent to swindle Nigerians. There lie a lot of challenges and battles the schools must be ready to face on resumption in spite of all the preparations.

The government and the mass media need to embark on a lot of aggressive sensitization and education of the populace through the various mass media platforms ahead of the schools' resumption, and continuously too, if we do not want to prepare our schools as coronavirus' slaughter houses and our children, the sacrificial lambs.

I have spoken!

UPDATE

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CONSIDER REOPENING OF SCHOOL. GIVE SCHOOL OWNERS UP TO JULY 29TH TO MEET UP PRECAUTIONARY GUILDLINES

17/07/2020

The House of Representatives has called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to order a partial reopening of schools to allow pupils sit the 2020 West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination.

The House called on Buhari to overrule the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, and allow pupils to sit the examination.

The House made the call at plenary on Tuesday following a unanimous adoption of a motion moved by Mr Nnolim Nnaji, with the Deputy Minority Leader, Toby Okechukwu; Chairman, House Committee on Basic Education and Services, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere; Awaji-Inombek Abiante, Usman Abdullahi, Abubakar Abdullahi and Bukola Oyewo, as co-sponsors.

The Committee on Basic Education and Services had on Friday faulted the decision of the Federal Government to suspend the plan to partially reopen schools for pupils in final classes to take external examinations.

The committee criticised the decision to disallow Nigerian pupils from sitting the WASSCE to be conducted by the West African Examination Council for the 2019/2020 academic session.

The House, while adopting the motion, “urge the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to reverse the decision of the Federal Ministry of Education withdrawing Nigeria from participating in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination and other similar examinations.”

The lawmakers also urge the minister to “immediately implement the health safety measures outlined by the Federal Executive Council for the conduct of examinations as well as provide soap, hand sanitizers and all other requirements stipulated by the NCDC.”
