The department of Linguistics University of Africa Toru-Orua on Thursday 19th February 2026 commemorated the International Mother Language Day. The event themed โ€˜Bayelsa State Languages for Cultural Preservation and Continuityโ€™ had the Ijaw National congress President Professor Benjamin Ogele Okaba deliver the keynote address.

Welcoming participants to the one day workshop, Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Solomon Ebobrah, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Barclays Foubiri Ayakoroma emphasized the importance of the mother language day adding that our children are gradually losing touch with the mother language thus the need to revive the teaching and learning of the mother tongue.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Okaba noted that the history of the International mother language day is tied to the agitations of students in Dhaka in Bangladash who went on a protest not to fight for political power but for their fundamental, sacred right to speak, to learn, and to exist in their mother tongue, Bangla. Adding that from that sacrifice, UNESCO forged a global principle that โ€˜linguistic diversity is not a quaint characteristic of humanity; it is a non-negotiable pillar of our collective heritage, dignity, and intellectual wealth' thus the theme of the programme โ€˜Bayelsa State Languages for Cultural Preservation and Continuityโ€™.

Prof. Okaba noted that the fight and defence of language is a fight for identity itself, because language is not just a distinctive factor of humanity, but a driver of culture and that which makes us who we are.

In Bayelsa State the, Prof Okaba noted that it is necessary to preserve our languages such as Ijaw, Nembe, Atissa, Ogbia, epie, etc because the language is gradually fading-off as recorded in a UNESCO ranking of languages that are dying in which the Ijaw language was so mentioned. He added that the implication of this is that โ€˜we would not only be losing words but it would shatter the lens through which our ancestors understood the universe and our place within it. Thus when we safeguard our dialect, we are safeguarding a complete intellectual cultural property, preserving our integrity and sovereigntyโ€™.

He further added that in bayelsa, the preservation of our languages is a cultural emergency as seen in our playgrounds and home where our children have neglected their languages and taken to the English language. He said to move forward, we must move from policy to ecosystem by creating a sustained budget for the Bayelsa State Book Development Agency to create childrenโ€™s literature in Izon, give grants to filmmakers and animators and partner tech hubs to develop izon learning apps. Conclusively he stated that traditional and religious rulers must champion the language in their ceremonies, while our music stars fuse the language into their lyrics.

Delivering his remark, Registrar of the University Dr. Akpoebi Adesi noted that the delivery is timely and apt. He added that a good step in the direction of the Izon language preservation would be to render the Bayelsa State Anthem in Izon language, and called on the Bayelsa State Government to think in that direction.

Royal Father of the day, His Royal Majesty King Seiyifa Koroye who was ably represented by High Chief Tony Diwere Thomas (fnim) thanked the organisers of the programme and encouraged participants to speak and teach their children the Izon language. Similarly, the Executive Secretary of the Bayelsa State Education Trust Fund (BTSEDTF) Prof. Etebu Ebimie-Owei also encouraged participants to speak the Izon language.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Education, Dr. Torupere Koroye appreciated the participant s for coming while also specially appreciating the Linguistics Department for a job well done.

Highpoint of the events was the launching of โ€˜A Comparative Wordlist of Four Bayelsa State Languages - Epie, Izon, Nembe and Ogbia โ€™ Authored by Atatisi Emiya Gladday, Stella Tonyo Akinola, and Thompson Olusegun Ewata. The presentation of a plague to the keynote speaker Prof. Okaba. Delivery of a lead paper on the history of International Mother Language Day by Prof. Thompson Ewata, and the rendition of a story in Nembe Language by Miss Bekebo Honour.
