The organ department of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam is proud of its long tradition of highly qualified education. Illustrious organists such as Anthon van der Horst, Albert de Klerk, Piet Kee, Ewald Kooiman, Hans van Nieuwkoop and Jacques van Oortmerssen taught at the department for many years. Among the renowned alumni who studied organ in Amsterdam are Jan Raas, Leo van Doeselaar, Ben van O

osten and Masaaki Suzuki. And the youngest generation of organists also proves our educational quality: students and graduates regularly stand a good chance at reputed organ competitions at home and abroad. The organ department offers a varied study programme, which is based on playing historical organs. A number of wonderful and famed organs in and near Amsterdam are used, including the Christian Müller organ at the St. Bavo and the Cavaillé-Coll organ at the Philharmonie in Haarlem, the Müller organ at the Waalse Church, the Philbert/Adema organ at the Moses and Aaron Church and the Bätz organ at the Round Lutherean Church in Amsterdam, and the Van Covelens and Van Hagerbeer/Schnitger organ at the St. To stimulate students into becoming versatile, high-level musicians, extensive attention is paid not only to the interpretation of organ music ranging from Early to contemporary, but also to improvisation. The basis for improvising is formed in the course ‘Keyboard Musicianship’. In addition, Miklos Spanyi teaches historical improvisation in monthly group lessons. Collaboration with other departments offers students the opportunity to gain interesting experiences and to develop new perspectives. Each year the regular curriculum is enriched with many activities, such as masterclasses by renowned visiting teachers from the Netherlands and abroad, concerts (including lunch concerts), projects and excursions. During the academic year 2015-2016, internationally celebrated Louis Robilliard, organist of the Cavaillé-Coll organ at the St. François de Sales Church in Lyon, will give three masterclasses and lessons on French repertory from the 19th and 20th centuries. For these lessons a limited number of places are available to outside students.

The organ class looks back on a great concert this past Saturday at Orgelpark, where all our organists performed chamber music by Franck, Saint-Saëns, Rheinberger, Pärt, Hannan and Langlais, Smits and Karg-Elert for an enthusiastic and receptive audience. Many thanks to the collaborative musicians; singers, wind & string players that helped make this concert a great success.

Looking back on a great day in Bussum around the Steinmeyer-organ with the organ class. Professor De Man (The Man) impressed with an informative, yet entertaining lecture on Max Reger and Gerard Bunk, after which our students channeled their inner romanticists with repertoire by these two. Recordings by the honorable gentlemen themselves helped sharpen our understanding of their time, style and personalities. A fruitful day in the office! With special thanks to Jaap Koole for the beautiful photos.

Start of the academic year with all new keyboard players. The history of the keyboard is represented through a great variety of instruments: from one manual Italian harpsichords to Viennese fortepiano's, French fortepiano's such as Erard and Pleyel, to the modern Steinway grand. This morning is closed off traditionally at the Waalse Kerk, where many pianists have a first try at the great Müller-organ.

Hangen orgelstudenten in de zomervakantie achterover? Juist niet, want dan geven wij extra veel concerten. Bijvoorbeeld komende dinsdagavond in Zaltbommel. Wibren Jonkers, Rina Ishii en Jan Hogendoorn verzorgen dan een kleurrijk concert op het Wolfferts-Heijnemannorgel in de Maartenskerk. Mis het niet! Voor het programma en tickets, zie:

Last Monday there were two final master exams in Alkmaar, played by Michael Bennett and Leonard Seeleman. Michael played Sweelinck, Bull and his own music on the wonderful Van Covelens organ (1511) and ended his exam with Bruhns, Bach and Buxtehude on the large Van Hagerbeer/Schnitger organ. Leonard played Bach (BWV 522), Messiaen (La Nativité) and Reubke on the big organ. They both passed with a 9 (out of 10). Congrats!

On this occasion we also thanked Pieter van Dijk who will retire after this academic year. He taught at the CvA for 36 years! On behalf of students and colleagues Matthias Havinga handed over a special organ pipe which will Pieter always remind of these fruitful years.
