Throwback to Tuesday's event!

Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny used one of the largest media platforms in the United States, the Super Bowl Halftime Show, to spread a message of Pan-American unity. It was one of the things that happened during a turbulent time in America, when immigrants were persecuted by ICE. What is the state of the Latin (and immigrant) community since then, and how is it rising up?

Anne M. Martínez explained the situation using Bad Bunny's halftime show and other examples.

We organized this event together with the Faculty of Arts - University of Groningen
and students from the American Studies program, who put in tremendous effort to make the evening a success. Thank you!

𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲: 𝗜𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗷𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗼𝗽 𝟲 𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲 𝟰𝟰𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗲𝘂𝘄-𝗹𝗲𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴

Boeken zijn paradoxale lichamen: kwetsbare objecten waarin ideeën eeuwenlang bewaard blijven. Ook ons eigen lichaam is fragiel, onderhevig aan tijd, ziekte en de beperkingen van het geheugen. Door de eeuwen heen hebben samenlevingen een opmerkelijke keuze gemaakt. We beschermen het kwetsbare: onze woorden, zieken, ouderen, zwakkeren. Vanuit dat perspectief is lezen ook een vorm van zorg, een manier om herinneringen levend te houden en mensen te verbinden.

In deze lezing verkent Irene Vallejo hoe in de geschiedenis boeken en zorg met elkaar verweven zijn om te laten zien waarom deze aandacht voor kwetsbaarheid samenlevingen sterker maakt en waarom dit urgenter is dan ooit. Coreferent is Joost Oomen.

How can we understand q***r experiences, and to what extent can we use this understanding to move towards a more q***r-friendly world? Social environments, institutions, and language all affect the way people experience the world, but what is it like to research these topics through a q***r lens? Are there any obstacles that researchers face, and is there space for activism? Researchers and artists from various disciplines will explore how their work not only analyses LGBTQ+ experiences, but also contributes to the ways these lives are understood, represented, and changed.
