MSc Water Technology

MSc Water Technology The master in Water Technology is a joint responsibility of the Wageningen Univeristy, the Universit

The main added value of this master program lies in the multidisciplinary use of biotechnology, chemical engineering and separation technology. The aim of the program is to integrate knowledge of several disciplines, based on physical, (micro)biological, chemical and electrochemical principles.

🎓 First year successfully completed!

Our students have officially completed their first year of studies and are now making the most of their well-deserved summer break!

But before taking some time to relax, they took on an exciting challenge: the Business Case Design Project. Working in groups, our students were challenged to understand real-world problems and develop innovative solutions to a range of topics, including waste valorization, new pathways for by-products, and treatment system design.

In this video, you can check out their final project presentations!

Have you heard? Recess is here.

After a long period of intense study, our students are finally enjoying their well-deserved break 🤭

But before closing this chapter on a high note, it is worth looking back at the practical week of Biological Water Treatment and Recovery Technology, when they took on several exciting challenges: operating a UASB reactor, quantifying methane production, working with an aerobic reactor, performing sludge activity tests, and experiencing the much-anticipated biocrystallization process.

Here is a glimpse of everything they accomplished during that intense and enriching week.

February and March were especially exciting months for the MSc in Water Technology. Our students had the opportunity to visit two of the three partner universities in the programme: Wageningen University and the University of Twente.

During these visits, they explored the academic environment in greater depth through classes such as Biological Water Treatment and Recovery Technology and Multi-Component Mass Transfer in Membrane Processes. At both universities, students also toured the laboratories and discovered the facilities each institution has to offer.

Beyond academics, Pontus, the student association, organised a bowling event for the students. After all, alongside studying, having time to relax and have fun is just as important.

Curious to experience it yourself? Join us as a student for a day. More information is available on our website.

Now that the sun is shining and our minds are slowly starting to drift to summer, it might be a good time to ensure that the following event is noted in your agendas. The Master Water Technology presents: the MWT introduction week!

During this week, you will be introduced to the program, Wetsus, and Leeuwarden. Most importantly, you will also meet your fellow students and get to know each other through fun activities. More details will be shared later, but for all students starting the program this September, the introduction week will be from the 26th to the 31st of August. So, save the date!

Additionally, there will be a general student introduction week in Leeuwarden known as LEIP! week, which will take place from the 22nd to the 25th of August (before the MWT introduction week). See here for more information: https://www.leip.nu/en/program/leip-markt
All in all, there's plenty to do this summer in Leeuwarden, and we hope to see you there!

Last week, we visited the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen to start the final part of our first year’s MWT program. After a lecture on business models and strategies, we learned about the different business case studies we will be working on until summer. Our cohort is now divided into four groups and has started designing the project plan to present to their specific client. The overall theme of all case studies is achieving sustainable water use and securing water quality. However, the exact clients and corresponding assignments vary quite a bit amongst the groups. From a plastic recycling company to a medical center, and from the Dutch island Schiermonnikoog to the Republic of Benin. National Test Centre Circular Plastics, Medisch Centrum Leeuwarden, Wetterskip Fryslân, and GDIZ - Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone, we are looking forward to our collaboration!

Here a small update from our classroom! We are now wrapping up our course Computational Methods in Water Technology. In a nutshell: A lot of solving of differential equations, and a lot of focused faces crouching behind their laptops trying to figure out the code in Python. Besides hard work, it's also important to take a good break and enjoy the gradually nicer weather we've been having lately! That's exactly what some of us did on the football field, with great fan support on the sideline!
