Although Yosano Akiko died more than eighty years ago, the story of her life is being retold even today. What is it about her life and work that continues to appeal to our imagination?

Both Yosano Akikoโ€™s oeuvre and life story are extraordinary: she ran away from home to marry for love and had eleven children, her debut collection of poetry shook the nation, and her critical essays were published in major magazinesโ€”all at a time when being a professional writer was still considered the prerogative of men.

This symposium will give insight into Akikoโ€™s life as a professional woman writer and the different ways in which her story has come down to us, specifically by looking at what her oeuvre does notโ€”or cannotโ€”tell us explicitly.

Ivo Smits will kick off the afternoon with a discussion of Akikoโ€™s poetry. Then Daphne van der Molen will shed light on Akikoโ€™s social commentaries. After the break, Jean Gordon Kocienda will discuss her recent work 'Girl in a Box', a novelization of Akikoโ€™s life. The afternoon will conclude with a roundtable discussion of Akikoโ€™s life and legacy moderated by Beste Sevindik.

For over three decades, EAJRS has brought together librarians, archivists, and Japanese studies specialists from all over the world. This week, we are proud to host the next chapter of the EAJRS Conference at Universiteit Leiden.

A look back at what unfolded today:
This year's conference theme โ€” Voyages (un)bound: libraries, travel, and the making of Japan's global image โ€” allows for a wide variety of topics.
๐Ÿ”น๐—ž๐—ฒ๐˜†๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€: Prof. Yasuaki Watanabe's insightful keynote address anchored the day in a solid discussion exploring literary travel and imagery in premodern Japan.
๐Ÿ”น๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป: The keynote was followed by Asuka Yamato, who discussed conservation and preservation of Japanese books in European collections.
๐Ÿ”น๐—”๐—œ & ๐——๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—›๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€: Scholars from the field took participants to the cutting edge of Digital Humanities; elucidating the finer details and hurdles of AI integration in digital archives.
๐Ÿ”น๐—ง๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—น๐˜‚๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ & ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜€: After lunch, two sessions covered technical solutions for text encoding, metadata visualization, and Japanese transliteration to enhance digital research tools, featuring a contribution by our very own Kiyoka Koizumi and Rie Fuse (University of Helsinki) on the challenges of implementing multiscriptural search in University Library catalogues.

To close out this productive first day, Luc Sels and Kurt De Belder ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ treated the conference participants to a reception at the University Library, welcoming them to Leiden on the occasion of our Japan year.

Thank you to everyone who made the journey to Leiden, both in person and online!

"Ask a monastery custodian if a manuscript is made of horse skin, and they may say no. But what if its size and the literature suggest it must be? In that case biocodicology can provide answers."

Shimels Ayele Yalew, a PhD student at ARCHES (University of Antwerp) and lecturer at Bahir Dar University, studies Ethiopic manuscripts in our Special Collections as a Brill Fellow. He studies their material, techniques of preparation, and how they deteriorate or survive in different environments.

โ€œBahir Dar University sits along Ethiopiaโ€™s historic route, near numerous island monasteries and inland churches holding rare manuscripts,โ€ Yalew explains. โ€œMany of these libraries remain quite inaccessible due to lack of infrastructure and awareness. Religious leaders are protective of their heritage and take care of it in their own way."

The project goes far beyond personal research. After completing his PhD, Yalew plans to return to Bahir Dar to launch a heritage conservation masterโ€™s program and run short-term training sessions.

โ€œWe want to build local knowledge and capacity to conserve manuscripts and other objects, like old vestments, crosses, coins, and architecture. I cooperate with groups like the Ethiopian Art Conservation Program to make this happen.โ€

"I study the manuscripts here in Leiden because you need an understanding of their construction to be able conserve them. Especially the diversity of the collection is impressive, in genre and material composition. So far, materials and conservation study of Ethiopic manuscripts has been limited, but that's what I hope to change: to integrate modern and traditional conservation methods and enhance knowledge with local communities. Hopefully, my students will be able to solve the many remaining mysteries around dating or material properties, like this tradition of using horse parchment".

โ€œThis 19th century Anaphora of Mary was bound with a 20th-century Litany. And look at the colourful miniatures in this other one! For this painting of Gebre Menfesqidus on the final page, they may have erased text, but it could also be ink transferred from a lost page. I'm still figuring that out.โ€

Molukse Literatuur - Sylvia Pessireron in De Postkoloniale Podcast
Luister nu: โžก๏ธ https://edu.nl/3ajtc
