I morges ble de nye KI-millionene til UiB feiret! 🥳 UiB er med på tre av de seks nye nasjonale KI-forskningssentrene-- som deltager med Juridisk fakultet i AI TRUST, med Fakultet for kunst, musikk og design i Mish Mash, og som leder for AI LEARN. SLATE og professor Barbara Wasson står bak AI LEARN, så her deler vi noen bilder av Barbara under feiringen!

Gratulerer til alle sammen som fikk tildeling, og gratulerer også til tre andre senterinitiativ som kom til finalerunden!

We are currently celebrating! Professor Barbara Wasson, Director of SLATE, will head the new research centre AI LEARN, which will conduct research on the interaction between human and artificial intelligence (AI) over the next five years.

The government announced today that the centre will receive 200 million kroner in support from the Research Council, as part of the national initiative on artificial intelligence!

Hurra! UiB får 200 millioner til et nasjonalt senter for kunstig intelligens 🎉

🧠 🤖 Senteret AI LEARN skal forske på hvordan mennesker og kunstig intelligens (KI) kan lære sammen og samarbeide på en ansvarlig måte.

– Hybrid intelligens er fremtiden, sier professor Barbara Wasson ved Det psykologiske fakultet ved UiB, som leder det nye forskningssenteret.

UiB skal lede senteret sammen med NTNU - Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet.

💰 Støtten fra Norges forskningsråd er den største enkelttildelingen til et forskningssenter ved UiB noensinne!

Good news! For the first time, SLATE and Universitetet i Bergen (UiB) will be able to offer a course to international students attending universities that are part of the European university alliance CHARM-EU!

We at SLATE would like to thank UiB for supporting us with 70,000 NOK to further develop and adapt DIGI110: Fantastic Data, the campus version of the course DIGI610: Fantastic Data. SLATE and UiB will be ready to accept students for the course as early as the autumn semester of 2025.

The course aims to provide basic knowledge of what data and digitalisation do to us and the society we are a part of, and what kind of technology is behind it. Because it is a fully digital course that is carried out asynchronously, DIGI110 is well suited to being offered across national borders and time zones.

The University of Bergen (UiB) has now supported SLATE with 70,000 NOK to further develop and adapt DIGI110, the campus version of the course DIGI610.

On May 12th – 14th, Dr. Martina Benvenuti, Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology, University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna), will be visiting SLATE through the Erasmus+ Teaching Exchange Program 2024/25.

During her visit, Dr. Benvenuti will offer workshops and networking activities. For example, she is leading the Robotraining® workshop on May 14th at the Arts and Humanities Library at Universitetet i Bergen (UiB). Her visit will focus on building a collaborative research network around the Digital Competence Framework for Citizens (DigComp) and the Digital Education Action Plan (2021–2027).

This week, Senior Researcher Kristin Børte and newly appointed Postdoctoral Fellow Jessa Henderson, Ph.D. are representing SLATE at the American Educational Researcher Association (AERA) Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado, USA.

Børte and Henderson are currently at AERA presenting papers and participating in roundtable discussions on topics such as data literacy and digital technology in education, and partnerships in teacher education.

AERA is a national research society that strives to advance knowledge about education, to encourage scholarly inquiry related to education and evaluation, and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of research results, and the use of research to improve education and serve the public good.

SLATE is pleased to announce that our application AI LEARN (Artificial Intelligence Centre for the Empowerment of Human Learning) is among the four applicants from Universitetet i Bergen (UiB) who have advanced to the final round where 19 proposals will compete to become one of 4-6 Norwegian national AI research centres!

The Research Council of Norway will fund 4-6 Artificial Intellence research centres (AI centers). The five-year research centres will emphasise AI, digital security and the societal consequences of digital technology development.

The University of Bergen is represented by four of the 19 finalists in the national competition to establish new AI centres. Discover the candidates here.

• There are no course fees.
• Travel stipends are available for students at NORA’s partner institutions.
• In order to register for the summer school, you have to be a PhD student affiliated with a Norwegian institution.
• Participants can only enroll in ONE of the four courses.

From June 10th to June 14th, NORA Summer Research School will take place at Høgskolen i Østfold (HiØ), Campus Fredrikstad. The Summer School offers four intensive courses on current topics within the field of Artificial Intelligence.

One of the four courses, Generative AI for Synthetic Data: Applications in Machine Learning, is offered by SLATE. Designed for PhD candidates and practitioners working with machine learning, data science, AI, or generative AI, the course will provide foundational knowledge and practical tools for synthetic data generation, yielding 5 ECTS from Universitetet i Bergen (UiB).

The course is led by SLATE Associate Professor Mohammad Khalil. The team assisting with organising the course are SLATE PhD Candidates Qinyi Liu and Farhad Vadiee, and SLATE Researcher Ronas Shakya.

SLATE is proud to announce that we have received NOK 1 600 000 from Vestland fylkeskommune for three new EVU (Continuing and Further Education) courses on understanding the data and the use of artificial intelligence!

Two of the three new courses will be customised versions of SLATE's well-established and popular six-week EVU course DIGI610 - Fantastic Data, this time aimed specifically towards teachers and the seafood industry. The third is AI in the Classroom, a new online EVU course for teachers, with a focus on the use of AI in the classroom.

Some of the funding will be used for updating the online course Datareisen, the curriculum for the DIGI610 and DIGI110 courses.

SLATE has received NOK 1 600 000 in total from Vestland County Council for three new Continuing and Further Education courses on Data and Artificial Intelligence.

Congratulations to our Director, Professor Barbara Wasson, who is now part of the Norwegian government's new committee for AI and higher education! The committee will provide advice on how artificial intelligence (AI) can benefit students, universities, colleges and society.

With her 35 years of experience with the use of AI and learning, we at SLATE think Barbara is perfectly suited for this important work!

– I will also draw on all the important work we have done in recent years through the UiB AI initiative and the DIGI courses at the University of Bergen. In addition, I will bring perspectives from my work in the Council of Europe's expert group on AI in education, Barbara says.

SLATE is proud to announce that André Rabello Mestre, PhD Candidate at SLATE, has been granted NOK 45 000 from the Meltzer Research Fund to support a research visit at the University of Cambridge!

The visit is related to Mestre's PhD project, entitled Computer-Assisted Creativity and Learning in Higher Education. The PhD project investigates how university students learn from their interactions with the emerging technologies that are reshaping our learning environments.
