🌊 PhD Course: Ocean Desires, Ocean Diversities 🌍 This interdisciplinary course explores the ocean as an object of desire—drawing on ethnographic case studies and cutting-edge research from biology, oceanography, law, and the humanities.

📅 1–11 June 2026
📍 Universitetet i Bergen (UiB), Norway 🇳🇴
🎓 Course leaders: Edvard Hviding, Marta Gentilucci and Jon Henrik Ziegler Remme

In an era of global precarity, the ocean has become a space of both problems and solutions: sea-level rise, global warming, acidification, and resource depletion challenge traditional ways of living with and off the ocean, while offshore wind and deep-sea mining open new frontiers.

The course brings together advanced research from biology, oceanography, law, and the humanities., with lectures by Lise Øvreås, Peter Haugan, Ernst Nordtveit, Marianna Betti (PhD) and Cecilie Vindal Ødegaard.

Through case studies from the Arctic to the Global South, participants will examine how diverse ocean expectations collide locally and globally—from coastal communities to multilateral arenas like the United Nations and the International Seabed Authority.

🐟 PhD Course: Ocean Productivity and Seafood in a Changing Climate 🌍🌊 As climate change reshapes marine ecosystems, understanding the limits and possibilities for sustainable seafood production has never been more critical.

This interdisciplinary PhD course will explore how climate change affects the sustainability and future availability of seafood for a world that relies on the ocean for food.

📅 1–11 June 2026
📍 Universitetet i Bergen (UiB), Norway 🇳🇴

🌊🎣 PhD Course: Diverse Ways of Sensing, Knowing, and Valuing the Ocean 🤿🪸⛵ This interdisciplinary PhD course explores the marine science–society–policy nexus. 📅 1–11 June 2026
📍 Universitetet i Bergen (UiB), Norway 🇳🇴
👥 Course leader: Mimi Lam

Inspired by the integrative approach promoted by IPBES, the course embraces pluralistic perspectives to help future ocean leaders navigate complexity with sensitivity and insight. We seek to:

🐋 Explore cultural, epistemological, and experiential diversity in ocean knowledge
🦐 Reflect on how this diversity can strengthen innovation and resilience
🪼 Understand how misunderstandings can arise—and how they can be reconciled
