📣New publication in Management Science!

Anna Hochleitner, together with Sebastian Fehrler and Moritz Janas, have published “Too Good to Be True – Individual and Collective Decision-Making with Misleading Signals.”

The study examines how individuals and groups make decisions when faced with correlated information, showing how an abundance of signals pointing in one direction can lead to deceptive conclusions and poor decision-making.

⭐ Bergen Labor Workshop 2026

This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming researchers to NHH for the Bergen Labor Workshop 2026.

Over two days, labour economists gathered in Bergen to present and discuss current research on topics including unemployment insurance, labour supply, taxation and inequality, intergenerational mobility, and gender gaps.

The programme also included an EALE Job Market Tour session, giving early-career researchers the opportunity to present their work and connect with the wider research community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at NHH Norwegian School of Economics for two days of engaging presentations, discussions, and conversations!

On Monday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Diana Mutz, Director of the Institute for the Study of Citizens and Politics and Professor of Political Science and Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, for a FAIR Seminar. 🗣

In her presentation, The Psychology of Foreign Trade, Diana shared insights from her published book, presenting experimental evidence showing how zero-sum thinking strongly shapes Americans’ views on foreign trade and international relations.

She also discussed findings from her more recent research, giving the audience a broader perspective on the psychological dimensions of trade and politics.

Thank you for a great seminar, Diana! ✨

📣New publication in the European Economic Review!

Björn Bartling, Alexander W. Cappelen, Ingvild L. Skarpeid, Erik Ø. Sørensen, and Bertil Tungodden have published “The talent paradox: Why is it fair to reward talent but not luck?”

Using a large-scale survey and an experiment, the study shows that people are more accepting of inequality caused by talent than inequality caused by luck — even when both are outside individual control. The findings offer new insight into how people think about fairness and the acceptability of inequality in society.

Highlights from the 2026 EUDN Conference ✨

From 6-7 May, we had the pleasure of welcoming researchers from across Europe to Bergen for the annual European Development Research Network (EUDN) Scientific Conference.

Over two inspiring days, participants presented and discussed new research on topics such as migration, finance, labor markets, governance, and gender, while also taking part in the EUDN General Assembly.

Hosted by Kjetil Bjorvatn and Vincent Somville, the conference provided a valuable opportunity for researchers to share findings, discuss ongoing work, and connect with colleagues from across the EUDN network.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us at NHH Norwegian School of Economics!

🗣 At this week's FAIR Seminar, we were delighted to welcome Lorenzo Casaburi, Associate Professor at the University of Zurich.

Lorenzo presented his paper “Copayments and the Value of Health Insurance: Experimental Evidence from Uganda”.

Abstract: How do copayments affect the benefits and costs of health insurance in low-income settings? We study this question in a field experiment in rural Uganda that varies copayments for hospital-based outpatient insurance. Insurance substantially increases the use of high-quality hospital care, improves health, and reduces reliance on costly coping strategies. Lower copayments generate larger increases in utilization, yet health and financial-protection gains are similar across copayment levels. Net benefits derived from treatment effects on health outcomes and insurer costs favor higher copayments. At the same time, households place substantially higher value on low-copayment insurance, underlining that optimal copayment design depends on jointly understanding treatment effects, insurer costs, and household demand.

Thank you for a great seminar, Lorenzo! ✨

✨New publication in the Journal of Political Economy!

Bertil Tungodden, Erik Ø. Sørensen, and Alexander W. Cappelen, together with William R. Zame and Shachar Kariv, have published “Linking Social and Personal Preferences: Theory and Experiment.”

The study shows that how people take risks and make trade-offs for themselves is systematically connected to how they decide in situations that affect others.
