BOURDIEU'S RELATIONAL "PHILOSOPHY"
What can we learn from Pierre Bourdieu’s “philosophy” and how can we turn his “philosophy” into a new way of thinking and dealing with (our own) scientific work today?
In my presentation, I ask what we can learn from the French philosopher, ethnologist, and sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s (1930–2002) relational “philosophy” and methodology – including his multidimensional approach to society. I also ask how we can turn Bourdieu’s “philosophy” into “new” and enriching ways of thinking and working, independently of our fields and topics.
Bourdieu and I use a special and visual method of analysis. This method is called correspondence analysis, and it is a type of geometric statistics and an alternative to traditional Anglo-American statistics (such as correlation analysis and regression analysis). – Bourdieu has used multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) in his work since the late 1970s, when he shifted from traditional statistics to MCA. I used MCA in my sociolinguistic study of linguistic accommodation among Danes in Norway in 2012. In 2025, I returned to MCA, and I am currently revising my analysis.
My point of departure in my presentation is four works by Pierre Bourdieu: Distinction (1979/1984(/2010)), Homo Academicus (1984/1988 (1996 in Swedish)), Language and Symbolic Power (1991), and Masculine Domination (1998/2001(/2007)). The English translations of La distinction in 1984 and Homo Academicus in 1988 are important in the sense that these translations have spread the knowledge of MCA – and, of course, Bourdieu’s thoughts and theories – in Europa.
My goal is to show how MCA contains and expresses a relational “philosophy” and to explore if and how Bourdieu’s work – including his MCA – can enrich our work today.
