The Digital Culture department is very proud to announce that our 2023 DIKULT student cohort has seen an unprecedented three shortlisted and one further longlisted project for the prestigious global New Media Writing Prize. We wish them all the best of luck for the awards ceremony on Wednesday night!
Shortlisted:
What Remains? by Vegard Fotland:
An interactive narrative that explores the relationship between glitch art and mental disorder. It tells the story of a young child who goes through tremendous turmoil and the trauma, anxiety and disassociation that follows. Through the use of visual and auditory glitching, the emulation of corrupted code, the piece works to connect the viewer with the experiences of the character. Trigger warning contains depictions of violence, suicidal tendencies and disassociation.
Polterkicks by Emma Husa:
A comedic interactive story about two ghosts with beautiful long legs, competing in a Wild West-style shoot out to decide who has the best legs in town.
I DREAMT OF SOMETHING LOST by Florence Walker:
A short interactive narrative about data, grief, and memory. You take control of Jules as they sit down to their desktop computer and discover a new message from their ex-girlfriend - who died a year ago to the day.
Longlist:
Dysthymia: A story about mental disorder by Bernard Radojkic:
A game illustrating the experience and the struggle of someone with dysthymia. Demanding skills such as precision, rapid reading, and coordination, Dysthymia is intended to be frustrating in order to paint the picture and help characterise the difficulty of coping with the disorder. The main goal of this game is to inspire, educate, and spread awareness about dysthymia.
