Short summary: Sea trout, the migratory form of brown trout, is an important species for nature, culture, and local economies along the Norwegian coast. In a large study, scientists analyzed over 3,000 fish from 105 rivers and found that most populations are genetically distinct—even between rivers in the same fjord. The influence of distance on these differences varied: strong in some fjords, weaker in others, and absent in the north. This rich genetic diversity is crucial to protect, through actions like habitat restoration, genebanks, and limiting negative impacts from aquaculture.
