ETS AND SUSTAINABLE SHIPPING: WHAT’S AHEAD OF US?

This was the topic for the first Ocean Business Talks organized by Centre for Ocean Business (OBZ), on 23 November 2023. This will be a series of around 4-5 such short talks (90 mins) every year, hosted at BI as a meeting place between scholars and industry.

The programme for the first Ocean Business Talks was as follows:

Welcome and a short introduction to the Centre for Ocean Business, by Randi Lunnan, Professor Chair (Tom Wilhelmsen Foundation), BI Centre for Ocean Business
-
About Ocean Business Talks
Moderator: Iva Parlov, Associate professor in law, BI Department of Law and Governance
-
Panel discussion: ETS and Sustainable Shipping: What’s ahead of us?

Ellen Eftestøl, Professor in law, BI Department of Law and Governance

Helge Hermundsgård, Business Development Manager, DNV

Heidi Aakre, Vice President of Shipping, Equinor

Øyvind Hvaal Størdal, Management Team, Hecla Emissions Management

The seminar went really well and all attendees agreed that the Ocean Business Talks have come to stay.

Tom Wilhelmsen Foundation will continue their support of OBZ for five more years, and their generous gift also includes a PHD scholarship focusing on the sustainable transformation in maritime industries. We are deeply grateful for this support that enables and facilitates our work on sustainable and valuable business models.

This gift supports us greatly in our ambition to be the business partner to maritime industries.

We are proud sponsors of a professorship in maritime research, as well as a PhD position, together with the Norwegian Business School (BI). The agreement, with the intention to further develop the BI Centre for Ocean Business, was established in 2006 and will secure funding from 2023-2027.

BUSINESS MODELS FOR FLOATING WIND

Centre for Ocean Business (OBZ) hosted this seminar at ONS in collaboration with Ocean Industry Forum Oslofjord and the Maritime Oslofjord Alliance. BI Norwegian Business School had chartered MS Brim from Brim Explorer as its venue for the entire conference, in addition to the stand at the fair.

This was a truly amazing seminar. If you would like to receive the presentations, please contact our project manager Tom O. Kleppesto on [email protected]

NYTT MEDLEM I OBZ: Vi ønsker velkommen som ny Business Partner, dvs nytt bedriftsmedlem, Ontogeny Group AS.

WORKSHOP 9 for Centre for Ocean Business and its business partners took place on Wednesday 23 September, 2020 - this time on board MS Brim, the first ship by Brim Explorer AS and founders Agnes Árnadóttir and Espen Larsen-Hakkebo. This amazing and groundbreaking hybrid electric ship was designed for silent whale watching outside of Tromsø, but due to the coronavirus it came to Oslo and discovered a whole new market.

BRIM: The agenda for the workshop included a presentation of the company, the vessels and the plans for more innovation, scaling and growth. So well aligned with the OBZ playbook, in other words.

AKER: Then we had a presentation of Aker Carbon Capture, one of the two Aker Solutions spin-offs that took the markets by surprise in late August this year. Jim Stian Olsen is the COO of the new company, following his past position as Innovation Program Manager in Aker Solutions as well as Adjunct Associate Professor, Mechanics of offshore materials at NTNU - Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet.

Then our own associate professor Sheryl Winston Smith, PhD, Associate Dean, MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation, gave a presentation called "Entrepreneurship in the corporate context: The search for global ideas" before professor Randi Lunnan, the leader of Centre for Ocean Business, presented a vision and strategy plan for OBZ which is up for discussion amongst the business partners.

As the photos show, the meeting was moving around the Oslo Harbour - in a lovely meeting room which can be highly recommended. Plus Teams of course.

WORKSHOP 8 was held on Friday 5 June at the premises of our business partner Eksportkreditt Norge AS where nearly 20 people gathered in person and 7 followed via Teams - which is during and probably also . There were altogether 6 presentations. Everybody present was grateful to meet in person again after months of working from home ☺️

Thank you Olav Einar Rygg for your generous hospitality and for providing us with a covid-19 safe environment!

The ceremonial launch of the Centre for Ocean Business (OBZ) took place on Friday 15 March 2019, after more then 18 months preparatory work to attract business partners and building an ecosystem for the Centre. Here is BI's own presentation of this on their website, however only in Norwegian.

Handelshøyskolen BI har etablert et nytt forskningssenter for å fremme forretningsutvikling og bærekraftig drift av havnæringene.
