New battery materials hold the key to transforming the way we power our world. In a rapidly evolving technological landscape, where the demand for efficient and sustainable energy storage is paramount, solid-state batteries offer a transformative departure from traditional liquid electrolytes.

These materials can offer higher energy densities, allowing batteries to store more power in a smaller volume, thereby revolutionizing portable electronics and electric vehicles. Additionally, they can give improved cycle life, ensuring longer-lasting and more reliable energy storage solutions.

This Friday, SMN and the Oxybat-project hosts a lecture series on novel battery technologies. Professor Venkataraman Thangadurai from the University of Calgary presents Garnet-Type Structure Electrolytes for All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries. We also have Dr. Larring Yngve from SINTEF and two of our PhD- candidates, Anders Brennhagen and Madeeha Khalid Pedersen, presenting parts of their research.

The event is held in Forskningsparken at Hagen 3, 10:00-12:30.

We're ! A position as Research Fellow in tandem materials is available at the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN, UiO) as part of the project DENT (Discovery and Exploration of novel materials for tandem solar cells) funded by UiO:Energi.

Tandem solar cell designs can potentially reach collection efficiencies 50% higher than today’s single-junction technology. However, there are inherent challenges in current state-of-the-art tandem materials, as the elements are either toxic, unstable, scarce, or too costly to fabricate for large scale production. The DENT project aims to find and experimentally verify novel materials capable of going beyond the state-of-the-art, and, if promising materials are discovered, fabricate solar cell devices.

The task of the PhD Research Fellow will be to experimentally investigate materials predicted by theory, or pre-screened promising materials, for their suitability in a tandem solar cell. The work will include thin film deposition and optical, electrical and structural characterization of the thin films. If an investigated material is found suitable, a solar cell test device will be fabricated and characterized.
