Design practice and design outcomes are fundamental in our research. It is design in the sense of multiple disciplines such as graphic design, product design, interaction design, sound design and service design. Emerging technologies meet design creativity and deep insight in advanced maritime operations, in our cutting- edge design lab. We have developed cutting-edge design and technology for shi

p bridges in close collaboration with the maritime industry. We are part of the Centre for design research at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design.

Wow! We just won an iF Design Award on behalf of .hyundai HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The project is a new concept design for the Himsen Zero Emission engine, focusing on the engine industrial design, the work area and all related user interfaces. https://lnkd.in/dwWMV9rE

It has been an exciting project where we collaborated remotely across Oslo and Korea, sharing innovations and design expertise. The industrial design was done expertly by Bijan Johansen and Borgar Kløve Sandnes , and the interaction design by Sunniva Wildhagen Lislevand . The designers was supported by the rest of the Ocean Industries Concept Lab research team and Geir Øxseth and Hilde Angelfoss.

Special thanks to Hongwook Chung from HD Hyundai for excellent management and design collaboration in this project. “Collaborating with Ocean Industries Concept Lab (OICL) was an inspiring experience in human-centered innovation design. OICL’s expertise in maritime design was essential for seamlessly integrating ship engine systems and digital interfaces into a cohesive and consistent design. The OpenBridge design system connects industrial design and interaction design, contributing to new standards in the maritime industry. This project is a successful example of real-time remote collaboration using digital tools, demonstrating how design can enhance safety and efficiency in the sustainable maritime industry.” Hongwook Chung.

Ocean Industries Concept Lab has grown over many years, and I’m grateful that we are now in a position to engage with the most important actors in the industry.

How complex components can you make in Figma? Well, pretty darn complex.

This is an example of an azimuth thruster for large ships, created for the hashtag design guideline. There are many design requirements for such user interface components and Jon Fauske has created a Figma component that covers just about all of them. The system is necessary to be able to adapt the component to a whole range of different use cases.

If you design for advanced technologies, you must test them too. Thanks to Remota for allowing us to test their systems. :-) Arkitektur- og designhøgskolen i Oslo

Christmas came early this year!
As the holidays approach, we’re excited to announce the launch of our largest icon upgrade yet! The new icon library has been expanded with nearly 1,000 new icons, bringing the total to over 1,500 open-source icons tailored for use in high performance workplaces such as maritime and other industries.

To make them even easier to access, the new icons are available in a dedicated Figma Icon file. Start exploring and enhance your projects with this powerful new resource!

We’ve given many of the original icons a fresh update and introduced entirely new categories. The library now features expanded collections of automation and maritime icons, as well as an all-new weather section created in collaboration with YR, part of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK).

Additionally, we’ve included a dedicated IEC 62288 section to explain our approach to the maritime standard. You'll also find new explanatory documentation in the guidelines, detailing the different types of icons and their uses.

From all of us in Ocean Industries Concept Lab at The Oslo School of Architecture and Design , we wish you a joyful and relaxing holiday season!

Ocean Industries Concept Lab has started a collaboration with Yr at NRK to enhance weather support in . The initial results are ready and will be included in the upcoming 6.0 release. YR is Norway's leading provider of public weather services, with systems trusted by nearly everyone in the country. As both an open-source and public service, YR is a natural partner for us as we integrate weather data into maritime interfaces.

Weather information is crucial for maritime operations, especially with the rapid growth of wind propulsion in the industry. OpenBridge adheres to strict maritime regulations, so adapting YR’s excellent resources is essential to ensure compliance and quality. We’re excited to bring their expertise to our platform and hope to do justice to their outstanding work.
