On 5-6 May, the Anthropologies of Sustainability research group hosted the workshop Care and repair: temporalities of securing life in the urban in the network “Confluencing urban thought to rethink the city - Franco-Nordic conversations” in the beautiful premises of Det Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskab (DKNVS). The workshop is part of a longer project seeking to rethink the urban from both Nordic, French, and more global perspectives. The project is organised by Bjørn Enge Bertelsen (UiB), Antonella Di Trani (ENSA – Paris-Val de Seine), and Morten Nielsen (National Museum of Denmark).

Antonella Di Trani, Arthur Mason, Gitte Koksvik, Irmelin Joelsson, Jon Rasmus Nyquist, Knut Christian Myhre, Lars Lyby, Morten Nielsen and Sigurd de Lichtenberg Rud presented wonderful papers dedicated to questions of care, repair, temporalities, and the urban. Thank you so much for coming to Trondheim and presenting your work!

The project is generously funded by Centre Universitaire de Norvège à Paris and Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme. This was the fourth and final workshop in the small network-building venture, in Trondheim organised by Irmelin Joelsson (NTNU) on behalf of project, with additional support from Institutt for geografi og sosialantropologi, NTNU and Institutt for sosialantroplogi ved Universitetet i Bergen.

Mange studenter forteller at de foretrekker å lese på papir. Vi ser også at lesing er i ferd med å bli «trendy» blant unge mennesker. Dette er bra, men boka er fortsatt truet fra andre hold.

We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to carry out our internship at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, through the CoSTClim project, where we are currently working this semester. 🌍

CoSTClim is a collaborative initiative between NTNU, Makerere University, Uganda Martur's University and RUFORUM focused on strengthening capacities in climate risk and natural resource management.

Throughout this internship, we’re exploring key themes such as climate change, migration, disaster risk reduction, and sustainability, in close collaboration with scholars and students at Makerere.

With the guidance and support of dedicated collaborators and educators, we’re gaining valuable insights and hands-on experience through fieldwork in Bududa, Karamoja, and Hoima — from interviews and focus groups to participatory design workshops.

We’re excited to continue learning, sharing knowledge, and contributing to meaningful work on sustainability and resilience. ✨

🥳50 år med geografi og sosialantropologi ved NTNU!

I forrige uke markerte vi en viktig milepæl: Det er 50 år siden geografi og sosialantropologi ble etablert som akademiske fag i Trondheim. Det som startet i 1975 som to institutter ved Norges Lærerhøgskole, har i dag vokst til Institutt for geografi og sosialantropologi (IGS) – et institutt som kombinerer stolte tradisjoner med fremtidsrettede perspektiver.

Jubileet ble feiret med et faglig seminar med tittelen «The Changing Landscapes of Geography and Anthropology», med inspirerende bidrag fra professorene Jenny Pickerill, David Evans og Elizabeth Povinelli, etterfulgt av en livlig paneldiskusjon. Dagen fremhevet styrkene og mangfoldet i våre fag, og når vi skuer fremover, betydningen av nysgjerrighet, engasjement og samarbeid.

Under festmiddagen på kvelden, delte vi minner fra de tidlige årene og reflekterte over det sammenslåtte instituttets mangfold og karakter. Vi var beæret over å ha familiemedlemmer til de to grunnleggerne av geografi og antropologi i Trondheim, Asbjørn Aase og Jan Brøgger, til stede.

Under seminaret og i talene på festmiddagen ble både den vitenskapelige og samfunnsmessige verdien av de to fagene understreket, og at vi i fortsettelsen vil være forpliktet til å fremme åpenhet, kritisk tenkning og tverrfaglig samarbeid.

I år er det 50 år siden to sterke fagmiljøer - geografi og sosialantropologi - formelt ble etablert som institutter ved Universitetet i Trondheim (nå NTNU). Vi inviterer til et bredt faglig arrangement torsdag 4. desember, en dag viet til fag, fellesskap og feiring. Temaet for seminaret "The changing landscapes of geography and anthropology".

Yesterday, we welcomed Prorector Monica Rolfsen and her team to the Department of Geography and Social Anthropology. The visit focused on our broad portfolio of long-term collaborations seen in light of NTNU's new Global South initiative. The team also met with our exchange and international programme students who bring invaluable perspectives to our programmes.

Global collaboration is at the heart of what we do, and we look forward to building on this momentum.

Strengthening Collaboration through COSTCLIM Staff Exchange
As part of the COSTCLIM project, we recently had the pleasure of hosting four colleagues from Makerere University, Uganda Martyr's University, and RUFORUM.

The visit began with the NorDev conference at NMBU, where we organized and participated in several sessions. Following the conference, we travelled to NTNU, where we held a series of seminars and guest lectures. Our partners shared their expertise with students and staff, enriching our academic environment and sparking new ideas.

A highlight of the visit was an excursion to Levanger with Per Arne Stavnås, where we explored landslides and climate change adaptation in the Norwegian context, getting to speak with some of the experts having the difficult task of stabilizing areas and rebuilding infrastructure.

We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate across borders and disciplines and look forward to continuing this important work through our long-term collaboration.
