To study Theology is to engage with the deepest questions of life:

What can we say about God? Where do we find meaning and identity? Theology will equip you to think through these questions – and many others like them – in ways that are consistent and coherent. Theological education at Otago is respected here and overseas for the calibre of its staff, the quality of its research, the reach of

its postgraduate programme and the grounding it provides to new students of Theology. The programme offers a nurturing environment for you to explore answers in light of the biblical writings, study the rich history of the Christian faith, investigate the thinking of past and living theologians, and learn about contemporary practice – while gaining the skills and knowledge you need to address the questions that really matter. We are a part of the School of Arts in the Division of Humanities at the University. Prof David Tombs recently published ‘Going Under the Yoke: Punitive Stripping and Disgraced Masculinity’ in Will Rose-Moore (ed), For Nothing is Hidden: Masculinities and Trauma in Church and Theology (London: SCM Press, 2026), pp. 69-82.

The chapter expands on David's work on the stripping of Jesus in the Gospels, looking at another account of stripping in the ancient world, that of Livy. Read the chapter here:

Congratulations to Prof Paul Trebilco, who has been presented with a Festschrift in recognition of his contributions to New Testament and early Christianity studies. The Festschrift is edited by Theology@Otago’s Dr Katie Marcar, along with Profs John Barclay and James Harrison, and will appear in Brill’s Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity (AJEC) series.

The timing could not be better because it has just been announced that Paul will be the president of the Society for New Testament Studies (SNTS) in 2028–29!
