In last week’s Alumni Success event, we had the opportunity to hear from EIT graduates, Ibrahim Hussain and Juvy Deangkinay.
Ibrahim opened the session. Originally from Sri Lanka, Ibrahim studied Master of Applied Management and spoke about making the most of student events and workshops as well as getting involved in extracurricular activities such as volunteering. These allow students to build networks not only at EIT but outside EIT as well.
Ibrahim shared the challenges he faced while searching for employment, reflecting on his job-hunting journey and the importance of perseverance. Through determination and resilience, Ibrahim ultimately secured a role and is now successfully working as an External Auditor at BDO Hawke’s Bay.
We also heard from Juvy Silerio Deangkinay who is from The Philippines and completed a Master of Health Science at EIT. Juvy now works as a Healthcare Support Worker at Custom Care Nursing. Juvy talked about the lessons she learned at EIT, and that success is not always about being the smartest in the room. Persistence, discipline, and resilience are equally important. Every struggle became a lesson, and every challenge helped her grow stronger and gain confidence.
During their time at EIT, Ibrahim and Juvy were peer mentors which allowed them to form friendships and build connections. They also studied through a series of challenging events, including COVID-19 and Cyclone Gabrielle and said these experiences strengthened their resilience and reinforced the importance of supporting one another.
Thank you to Ibrahim and Juvy for sharing your success stories with us and to everyone who attended this session.
