Good news: The MPAs are no-take marine reserves, areas where all extractive activities are banned, co-managed by the regional Māori tribe Kāi Tahu and the Department of Conservation. The full network is expected to have the reserves alongside other types of protected areas with less strict protections: five mixed-use Type 2 MPAs and one kelp protection area. This makes 12 MPAs in total, six of which would be reserves.
