A lasting legacy supporting the next generation of nurses. 💙

A new annual $10,000 nursing scholarship has been established at EIT in memory of much loved former nursing lecturer Maxine Mae Anderson.

Maxine had a connection with EIT spanning more than 20 years and was deeply committed to supporting her ākonga. Through a generous bequest, that commitment will now continue for generations to come.

The scholarship will support a second or third year nursing ākonga each year, with the first awarded for study in 2027.

It was a special week for our nursing whānau and the wider EIT community. 💙

On Wednesday morning, we gathered to bless the new window mural at Te Kahikatea – Clinical Simulation Suite. The mural celebrates mātauranga and the development of nursing and health sciences at EIT, weaving together pūrākau and recognising the contributions of Ākenehi Hei, Dr Susan Jacobs, Sir Mason Durie, Dr Irihapeti Ramsden, Professor David Tipene-Leach, and Chris Bryant-Toi.

Then, on Thursday evening, our kaimahi and ākonga were joined by dignitaries, members of the Hawke’s Bay health community, and supporters at EIT’s Hawke’s Bay Campus in Taradale to officially celebrate the opening of Te Kahikatea and tour the new facility.

The state-of-the-art simulation suite marks another significant milestone in EIT’s recovery from Cyclone Gabrielle and provides our nursing ākonga with a realistic, purpose-built environment in which to develop their clinical skills and confidence. 🩺

Within a day of each other, new carvings were unveiled at EIT's Wairoa and Maraenui Learning Centres, adding two more links to te aho a Māui.

The series takes its name from Māui's fishing line. Every poupou radiates out from the waka maumahara at the Hawke's Bay campus in Taradale, the pūtahi or centre, and each one carries eight pāua shell eyes: one for every EIT campus and learning centre across the North Island. Māui was chosen as a common ancestor for Māori and Pasifika, his line standing for a line of thought, a destination and an arrival.

Each carving tells its own pūrākau. At Wairoa, the story of Māui and his tupuna Murirangawhenua. At Maraenui, the tricks Māui played on Mahuika, keeper of fire, blessed as te ahi kōmau a Māui, the fire within, after kaimahi, ākonga and community came together in wānanga to name it.

Behind the work is carver Emanuel Dunn, an IDEAschool Bachelor of Creative Practice graduate who brings both Western art training and whare wānanga knowledge to what he makes, supported by co-carver and IDEAschool Senior Lecturer Chris Bryant-Toi.

Yesterday we celebrated two outstanding ākonga at Te Ara o Tāwhaki. Congratulations to Jessica Martin-Lyford and Courtney Diehl, recipients of the Te Kupenga Hauora Ahuriri Scholarships for third-year Nursing and Social Work students. 🎓

A big thank you to Te Kupenga Hauora Ahuriri, Mamia, and NZNO for joining us in recognising their achievements. We're also grateful for the ongoing support of Te Kupenga Hauora Ahuriri in helping shape our Te Ata Māhina Social Work degree and strengthening our commitment to Te Tiriti.

After nearly 20 years and raising six children, EIT ākonga Noel Faletutulu is finishing what she started with support from the Margaret Hetley Scholarship. 💙

Noel first began studying at EIT in 2009 and returned in 2025 determined to complete her qualification. She is now working towards her Bachelor of Accounting, with plans to pursue primary school teaching after graduating.

“My whole life, I’ve always struggled with finishing what I started and giving up when things got hard. Then I thought, no, I’ve got to finish. This is for my kids, and for me and my family.”

The scholarship, which supports women undertaking tertiary study at EIT, has eased financial pressure and helped Noel pay for her remaining papers.

A huge congratulations to Noel and her whānau, who have supported her every step of the way! 🎓

Meet three incredible young wāhine balancing study at EIT with representing New Zealand in their chosen sports. 🌏📚

Sport Hawke’s Bay and EIT recently celebrated the recipients of the 2026 Sport Hawke’s Bay EIT Sport Scholarship:
🏑 Emily Brun – New Zealand indoor hockey representative
🏏 Aniela Apperley – New Zealand indoor cricket representative and Central Hinds cricketer
🏃‍♀️ Mackenzie Spears – New Zealand triathlete

The annual scholarship provides financial support to help student-athletes balance the demands of study, training and international competition.

From representing New Zealand around the world to building careers in sports nutrition, teaching and performance analysis, Emily, Aniela and Mackenzie are incredible examples of the talent growing right here in Hawke’s Bay.
