Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington The Confucius Institute of Victoria University of Wellington (CIW) is dedicated to promoting Chinese

The Confucius Institute (CIW) at Victoria University of Wellington was formally established in June 2010 in the presence of Chinese President (then Vice President), Xi Jinping, as a partnership with Xiamen University in China. It opened in March 2011 as part of a worldwide association of 500 CIs now operating with the financial backing and support of the Centre for Language Education and Cooperat

ion and Chinese International Education Foundation. The role of CIW is to build New Zealanders’ understanding of and familiarity with China, its language, culture and people. The Institute provides opportunities for New Zealanders to learn Chinese in schools and in tailored and community classes, both in person and online. It brings Chinese artists, writers, musicians and performers to New Zealand audiences for an experience of Chinese traditional and contemporary culture, often in collaboration with Kiwi artists and performers. Being part of Victoria University of Wellington, CIW contributes to building engagement and academic links with China, especially with Confucius Institute partner, Xiamen University.

抽象 (Chōuxiàng)
🌀 抽象 – “Abstract / Unhinged”
English‑friendly: “Cho-shee-ang”

In internet slang, 抽象 means something that’s bizarre, hard to follow, or downright absurd – often used when someone says or does something so random it leaves you speechless. 😅

Example:
他今天发的视频太抽象了,完全看不懂。
Tā jīntiān fā de shìpín tài chōuxiàng le, wánquán kàn bù dǒng.
“The video he posted today is so unhinged – I can’t make any sense of it.”

🎮 Chopsticks, shuttlecock, and a whole lot of fun!

During NZ Chinese Language Week, students at Mosston, Kai Iwi, and St George's schools got to try some classic Chinese games – chopstick challenges, air‑gun character shooting, shuttlecock kicking, and pitch‑pot! 🥢🎯🏸

The best part? A mini‑concert with lucky draws, and a group dance to the mega‑hit "Little Apple" 🍎💃

Thanks to Beck Ding and Yang Chen for bringing the energy!

松弛感 (Sōngchí gǎn)A
🫧 松弛感 – “Relaxed vibe”
English‑friendly: “Song-chrr gan”

A popular internet term describing a calm, unfazed, and easy-going attitude – not lazy, but mentally composed even when things get busy. It’s the opposite of “stress mode”. 🌿

Example:
她最近很有松弛感,什么事都不慌不忙。
Tā zuìjìn hěn yǒu sōngchí gǎn, shénme shì dōu bù huāng bù máng.
“She’s been so relaxed lately – nothing seems to fluster her.”
