The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) CALABARZON brought together local government leaders, partner agencies, and science and technology advocates for the 4th Smart and Sustainable Communities Conference (SSCC), held as part of the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW).

The conference highlighted DOST’s commitment to advancing science, technology, and innovation for smarter, more resilient, and sustainable communities by encouraging local government units (LGUs) to adopt DOST-developed and DOST-funded technologies.

A key highlight was the awarding of iSTAT-SSC partners, recognizing the city governments of Carmona, Santa Rosa, Lipa, and Lucena, and the Municipal Government of Taytay, Rizal, for their collaboration in advancing smart and sustainable community initiatives.

The event also marked the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between DOST and the Municipal Government of Taytay, Rizal, for the SEERMO Project, strengthening their partnership in promoting technology-driven local development.

Through the Smart and Sustainable Communities Program (SSCP), DOST and its partners continue to champion innovation-driven governance and collaborative efforts toward more inclusive, responsive, and sustainable communities.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) turned over Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Plans to the Municipality of Tanay, Rizal, and the City of Lucena, Quezon, strengthening efforts to integrate science and technology into local governance for the benefit of the people.

The STI Plan serves as a strategic guide for local government units (LGUs) in identifying development priorities and applying science-based solutions to improve public services, livelihoods, disaster resilience, and environmental sustainability.

The initiative supports DOST’s Smart and Sustainable Communities Program (SSCP) by helping LGUs align local development goals with appropriate technologies, innovations, and DOST programs. Through this collaboration, DOST aims to translate science and innovation into practical solutions that address community needs and improve quality of life.

𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐓𝐎𝐒: 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧, 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐩 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲

The Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), the University of Rizal System (URS), and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Tanay, Rizal formalized their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) during the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) CALABARZON.

RYPIC Rizal will primarily focus on textile recycling, transforming textile waste into valuable resources to support sustainable textile production and promote a circular textile economy. With the garment industries of Rizal and nearby provinces in CALABARZON and as potential sources of textile waste, the facility aims to strengthen textile waste recovery and upcycling efforts while creating new opportunities for local weavers, designers, and enterprises.

The facility will also process locally available natural textile fibers into yarns for handloom weaving, apparel, and home textiles. With a production capacity of up to 50 kilograms of yarn per day, the facility will help improve access to specialized yarns, strengthen the regional textile value chain, and generate livelihood opportunities.

The establishment of RYPIC Rizal further supports DOST-PTRI’s Textile Revitalized (TexRev) initiative, advancing resource efficiency, sustainable textile innovation, and the development of a more circular and resilient Philippine textile industry.

The launch of RYPIC Rizal is targeted for January 2027.
