USLS 🀝 UPV for MARINE MAMMALS OF ILOILO STRAIT. University of St. La Salle has partnered with University of the Philippines Visayas for strengthened monitoring of marine mammals in Iloilo Strait and our research team, together with BFAR Region 6, has just concluded our 2nd quarterly survey. Iloilo Strait is a vital habitat for endangered marine wildlife such as the Irrawaddy dolphins, dugongs, whale sharks, and sea turtles that need constant research and monitoring so that they can be conserved better for a healthier marine ecosystem.

WORKING TOGETHER FOR MARINE MAMMALS. University of St. La Salle and BFAR Region 6 and in coordination with Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines, recently conducted a 3-day Training on Marine Mammal Interaction, Stranding Response, and Reporting for LGU and Bantay Dagat Personnel of the Municipalities of Ajuy, Concepcion, and San Dionisio of the Province of Iloilo. The training was also attended by representatives from the Philippine Coast Guard and Philippine National Police Maritime Division, as well as the Provincial Government of Iloilo.

The training aimed to capacitate the participants on how to respond and rescue stranded and bycaught marine mammals. The LGUs that participated possess known habitats of the endangered dugong, and form the first of many clusters that BFAR 6 plan to capacitate all over the region. The training was conducted by USLS marine mammal researchers Mark de la Paz and Angelico Tiongson πŸ¬πŸ³πŸ‹

ADVANCING CIRCULAR FOOD AND WASTE SYSTEMS THROUGH BSF BIOCONVERSION: The University of St. La Salle, through the Center for Research and Engagement, met with GIZ representatives to align the implementation of the Bacolod City BSF Bioconversion Demonstration Project.

The project aims to generate evidence that can help Bacolod City assess the safe and scalable adoption of Black Soldier Fly bioconversion, covering ecological safeguards, feeds and frass quality, agronomic performance, chitosan feasibility, and market uptake.

The meeting focused on project implementation, monitoring and evidence requirements, reporting, and coordination as activities move forward.

TOWARDS THE PROTECTION OF ENDANGERED MARINE SPECIES AND SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES: CRE is glad to work hand in hand with multi-sectoral groups towards the long-term sustainability of Negros Island's Blue Swimming Crab (BSC) fishery while understanding its interactions with endangered species such as Irrawaddy dolphins, dugongs, marine turtles, and sharks to ensure their long-term survival.

Today's meeting is the first of what we hope will be a long-term partnership with Monterey Bay Aquarium, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources NIR, State University of Northern Negros, Municipality of Manapla, Balyena.org, and the Provincial Environmental Management Office of Negros Occidenal.
